one thing I'm interested in seeing is what (if any) affect this will have on the Martian orbit or planetary rotation. I doubt this impact will have any massive effect (like totally reversing the Martian rotation like is seen with Venus for example). but I still think an object this massive hitting a planet that is roughly half the size of earth will have some measurable effect.

How many telescopes do you own?

I looked up the explosions on the surface of Jupiter at around 2:45 and then followed a YouTube chain for the better part of an hour.
I eventually watched videos on black holes, the upper dimensions, hypercubes, those zen magnet things, and somehow wound up watching how it's made videos.
Gotta love the internet.

Go look up the Great Attractor. Pretty erie when you think that there is something that massive out there.

And if you want to to see something fun, go look up the enormous cloud of alcohol in space that tastes like raspberries or something

LOL. Since you brought up the Jupiter comet impact here is something to consider. The comet that impacted on Jupiter (Shoemaker Levy 9) was originally about 3 miles in diameter before it broke up into numerous pieces shortly before hitting Jupiter. It was literally torn apart by Jupiter's massive gravity. It broke up into something like 20 separate pieces and left a trail of impact scars on the Jovian "surface" (for lack of a better term). The largest of those impact scars was larger than the planet Earth. That was done by a comet that started out at about 3 miles across and broke into over 20 pieces before hitting the largest gas giant in the solar system.

Now consider scientists are saying the comet that may impact Mars is roughly about 31 miles in diameter (10 times bigger than Shoemaker Levy 9), and couple that with the fact this comet will more than likely hit Mars still more or less intact due to Mars rather weak gravity. Factor in that Mars is a rocky planet and is roughly only half the size of the earth. This impact will be like nothing we've ever seen. The entire surface of Mars will be totally transformed.

Any predictions on what the final on-the-ground footage will look like before our puny landers are obliterated?

re: Very Large comet may hit Mars in Oct 2014

Good question. Really we won't be able to film this close up as we will not have time to get anything in orbit of the Red Planet in time before this monster strikes. I guess we will have to train some of our orbital telescopes on Mars as well as rely on ground based telescopes as well.

As for what the poor rovers already on planet will see, probably a second or two of blinding light followed by oblivion.

One more things this raises is what affect this will have on future exploration of Mars. For starters there will probably be a massive debris field thrown up into orbit over Mars that will make any trips there hazardous at best and impossible at worst. Eventually this debris field will eventually settle into a ring system similar to what we see around Saturn, but that will take thousands of years.

Sounds about right, but it would be so cool if they were able to film their approaching destruction like in a disaster movie.

Yep. My post a couple of days ago seems eerily prescient:

Nothing fricks up your vacation plans like a 20 billion megaton comet.

Wouldn't it be awesome if the comet hit Mars and then sent the planet hurtling toward Earth?

What are the odds the comet actually hits Mars?

Has a calculation been made for date and hour and relative position for viewing from earth?

our luck is it will probably hit on the far side of the planet from Earth.

It's sad this doesn't get at least a little more airplay on the news cause it is incredible. completely changes the outlook for space exploration if it does happen.

apparantly it's unknown right now, just a possibility.

ignore previous comment about the news not covering being disappointing.

So how many big pieces of Mars will come hurling towards Earth after impact is the real question.

Large objects? The odds are against any coming at us, at least any that would not burn up in the atmosphere.
