I'm sure they do but think they crossed the line of good taste on this one. I honestly don't care one way or another on this one, and frankly have never thought The Onion was really that funny to begin with.

Well, to each his own. I've always been able to find something in an Onion paper that had me laughing out loud. I've been reading them since ~1998, and I can say they have always been offensive and getting humor at the expense of somebody or something.

A lot of the humor in The Onion is the type that has you laughing, saying "that's so wrong!" That's their schtick.

Again, I don't think some in this thread get that, because they're ignorant to what The Onion is and just going along with it saying they do know what it is.

Here's IMO what would be typical and "funny" if you will for the onion. Pick a known feminist author and call her cunt. The play is on subjecting someone above all that to some base, sexist insult. That's what I would expect from the Onion.

Picking out a child and going for pure insult shock humor will not play with their audience. Make a comparison to Honey Boo Boo or some joke about her entering rehab like stereotypical child stars - that would be par for the Onion. Just flat out calling her cunt, is a bit off. It's more on the lines of making cracks about retarded kids. Sure some comedians do it, but there's an audience for that, and its not the Onions twitter feed.

I doubt if a complete stranger stood up at your daughters dance recital and called her a cunt you would just laugh it off. If you did that would make you a huge pussy.

Yes it is. Oscar night was her moment, she earned the right to be there, just like your daughters moment would be her dance recital. When people tweet or follow twitter during an event like this, they want to be a voice in the crowd, they actually feel like they are at the event. It's the same thing IMO. I don't care how you try to justify their actions that shite was tasteless. They had about a thousand cunts in attendance at the Oscars, why single out a 9 yr old girl.

Dear Readers,

On behalf of The Onion, I offer my personal apology to Quvenzhané Wallis and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the tweet that was circulated last night during the Oscars. It was crude and offensive—not to mention inconsistent with The Onion’s commitment to parody and satire, however biting.

No person should be subjected to such a senseless, humorless comment masquerading as satire.

The tweet was taken down within an hour of publication. We have instituted new and tighter Twitter procedures to ensure that this kind of mistake does not occur again.

In addition, we are taking immediate steps to discipline those individuals responsible.

Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry.

Sincerely,
Steve Hannah
CEO The Onion

Sucks that they had to delete the tweet and apologize

They should have left it up and stuck to their guns or not tweeted it at all

Yeah, I'm more offended by The Onion's laziness than anything.
