Being forced to grat at a restaurant with a small group :-(

(TLDR notes at bottom)
I had to take some kids out to eat. I let them pick, and they picked Applebee's. Man I HATE that place, but the girls wanted it.
Anyway. No drinks at all until after the app hit the table. No silverware until after the food came out. (no napkins for the app at all had to take some from the bar) The server was never around. No refills when we ran low. The sides were wrong on two dishes. And she brought the kids deserts out one after the other. You always bring food out together. Especially with two competitive kindergarteners.
So I told a manager our qualms. Wasn't upset at all. I told my g/f that I was going to just give her 15% which is what I give for bad service. 10% for shite service. Being it was bad, but not shite, so she still deserved 15% (Even though she asked me "why don't you look happy) It's not a place you go for great service.
Anyway bill comes..
18% added to the bill.
We only had two adults and two kids. That's two guests, the check said two guests. Why charge me 18%.
I feel for the Preacher who stiffed the server now.
It was the principle of the matter.
Just crappy. I hate being forced to pay a tip. Especially when service was bad.
TLDR people
went to crap chain, got rally bad service, wanted to tip 15% but was forced to tip 18%
Feel its wrong to force one to tip

Eh - I see what you're saying but how much was 3% more at applebee's really?

Should have brought it up with a manager, generally the rule is either 5 or 8, but all the places I've worked at have counted kids except one.

Applebee's I guess does it bc of the "clientele" that comes in and tries to protect their servers
Eta: bad service blows, sorry

Mail them the tip in a tampered-with box but really only mail them crumpled up newspapers... WIN!

I'm pretty sure you can ask to have to auto grat taken off if its that bad.

so they had a mandatory gratuity for a table of 4?...I can't say I have ever heard of that...

The first serving job I ever had in a restaurant was at Applebees. I can tell you that there should not have been a gratuity of 18% added for 2 adults and 2 kids. It's only when there are 8 or more guests that gratuity is added automatically by the computer (the server has to enter in the number of people in a party in order to start a new check). It's also a suggested gratuity, not something you are required to pay. If your service was that bad, and I agree it was bad, you should call up there tomorrow and complain. They will take care of it for you.

Isn't gratuity based on pretax total?
I always tip on the total with tax personally, so you probably "proved your point" an didn't even know it.
Ex. $45.87+9%tax= $50 ($10 tip is 20%)
An 18% grat would be $8.26, or 16.5% of the tax total, so at most your griping about 1.5%

4 people and they added gratuity? That is crap. I do 6 or more and my girls know I will remove it if there are any issues. It is pretty easy to tell the legit issues with the made up ones.

I wonder how many people notice that on their bill. Maybe that's what they're going for. They're hoping that your average Joe will look at the bill and just pass over that little factor to look at the final price.

Server outside smoking.I'm not an Applebee's fan either.I get what you're saying. It cost you a bad experience and a little money for a "Get Out of Applebee's Dinner" card."Let's go to applebee's."
"No.You remember the bad service we got last time."
So.you got that going for you.

So you complained to the manager before you got the bill?
Sounds like he told the waitress you were gonna short her on the tip, so she hit you with the 18% grat.

Dude, if its that big of a deal you don't need to be going out to eat.
Posted on 2/25/13 at 8:43 am to Napoleon
18% as oppossed to 15% for 2 adults and 2 kids.
What's that? Maybe an extra $1.5?
I see what you're saying but I wouldn't be mad enough to post about it.

If you're cheap enough to go to Applebees for a birthday, you deserve what you get. (Not saying it was the OP's choice in this case)
Don't know why people are continually surprised when this happens.
Applebee's is the bottom of the barrel as far as chain restaurants.
