This has been my mantra for decades now. To fix this problem, we should take every federal department and immediately take out one-third of their money and one-third of their employees. Force everyone of them to examine their chartered mission and prioritize their activities accordingly. Then, next year, each one should be subject to the exact same reduction unless they describe in detail what chartered mission requirement would go undone. All subject to congressional oversight. Make them justify that guy in charge of arranging PR visits for the administrative assistant to the secretary of the manager for out of town conferences for the chairman of the committee to arrange political events for the deputy department head.

frick, the CBO even made a recommendation that was a baby step compared to that and it saved Trillions over a Decade Annually cut 1% from Defense Spending and 1% from Social programs and it save nearly 1 Trillion over 10yrs. Then they made other minor recommendations and it accounted for another 3T over 10 yrs.

As if they listen to recommendations from the CBO. They're just that - recommendations. Not demands. I can tell you every year of my Federal experience my direct office gets huge increases each year. For example, right now we are trying our hardest to find training and spend the allocated FY 13 budget money. Unfortunately, none of the training we go to is even relevant...just spend baby. I guarantee you could cut 15 percent this year from my budget, and my peers would not be directly impacted oustide of receiving bonuses - which most of them don't deserve anyway.

I can only imagine... Its absolutely amazing how bad things are. We need a President that will run the country as a business, not as a snake oil salesman.

I wish that money would roll over to the next FY or Qtr, or At least part of it. It is sickening watching the spendex.

Btw, if the Sequester doesn't happen, could the US face a credit downgrade from Moody's? Since they just downgraded Europe

If the Sequester is the most aggressive slowing of corpulent budgetary increase American politicians can accomplish, Moody's should downgrade us regardless.

I agree... Im surprised that S&P was the only one that did last year. But you see what happens if you do, the US Govt comes after you.

Let's make this ridiculous sequester simple...if the amount the gov spends this year is "X" and the budget for next year is "X" plus 10%, this sequester is "X" plus 5%....so they are really cutting NOTHING, this sequester simply doesn't raise spending as much...these politicians have no f'n guts and "we the people" should not stand for it....REVOLT!!!

Maybe for once feds will do what the private sector generally does in such times - lay off the riff raff and keep the productive.
