her fault

This woman I know is married. Her and her husband have 5 kids, including a 6 month old baby. Husband worked, she stayed home. She never graduated high school.

They had just enough money to get by.

sounds like a smart idea, no?

quote:

She now has to find a job and raise 5 young kids by herself.

or, re-marry...or find another in her situation to share household / responsibilities, etc

quote:

What is the solution?

Solution to what? The choices SHE made? Would she have welcomed the Gov stepping in a saying "you cannot marry this guy. His character is such that he will leave you"? How about Gov stepping in after 2 kids and saying "ENOUGH frickING ALREADY! You cannot afford more kids!"

But, NOW...the Gov is supposed to step in AFTER the fricking and the marrying a dude with low character and be responsible for 'solutions'?

Sorry...I reject that.

1. hunt the father down and make him pay
2. make him pay some more
3. get help from family
4. all else fails give the children up

Why isn't there enough charity? You have plenty to eat. Why aren't you helping more?
I help. But how can we count on other people to do the same?

Why must i be forced to give charity through government intervention?
Why must i pay for the mistakes of another?
Why must the only person be held accountable, be the taxpayer?

Charity is great. Forced charity through taxation just promotes the same behavior to continue.

I agree with this.

However, there are now others involved that had no decision to make in the matter - the children.

re: Libertarians... I have a question...

quote:

What should be the government's role in this situation?

This woman I know is married. Her and her husband have 5 kids, including a 6 month old baby. Husband worked, she stayed home. She never graduated high school.

They had just enough money to get by.

Then, the husband quits his job, and deserts them.

She now has to find a job and raise 5 young kids by herself. Having not graduated high school, her job choices are very limited.

What is the solution?

Sounds like she made a bunch of terrible choices over the years. Why is it my problem?

Again..if you reject Gov interference on who you CHOOSE to marry and how many kids you CHOOSE to have...stop expecting Gov to be involved in the aftermath.

Now, I do agree that the gov should enforce the "contract" and help (through the courts) her ability to extract child support from the a-hole.

But, that is it

1 and 2 would only work if they find him and if he has any money. Doesn't do anything in the meantime.

3. Her parents are gone and she doesn't really know any other family.

4. That is the only option.

But there are a TON of people like this... Mothers would have to be giving up their children left and right, and there is already an excess of children in foster homes.

I hear welfare in Canada works like a loan.

I agree with the no crowd. This dude was always a bum, so why have five kids with him.

The solution is a civil suit against the father. Also, she should have educated herself, and there are jobs she can work.

I didn't ask why you aren't helping. I asked why you aren't helping more. They apparently need more help than they are getting. Why aren't you helping more? Have you reduced your expenditures to the bare minimum in order to help them as much as you possible can? Have you taken a second job?

If not, why not?

Oh, Gawd save us from the good intentions of those that want to act "for the children"

Why must I pay for nuclear weapons?
Why must I pay for other people's childrens' education?
Why must I pay for roads I may not use?
Why must I pay salaries for politicians I voted against?
Why must I pay for health care for people I don't know?

...because it makes us a better society.

Until you drop the whole, "I shouldn't have to pay taxes for things I don't want" thing before anyone can really take you seriously. We ALL pay taxes for stuff we don't want. The answer is NOT to simply stop having taxes.

Or better yet. How can we count on people to not do this in the first place? Why aren't people held subject to their past misdeeds?

She gambled with her life and lost.

She assumed her husband would always be there, he wasn't.
She assumed not having a high school education would be ok, as long as she had a husband to support her, she was wrong.
She assumed that since she has a husband and no education, that having not 1, not 2, not 3, but 5 kids, would be ok, and that she could provide for them. She was wrong.

In short, she is stupid. She wagered her future and her kids future on chance. She beat the odds 3 times, but the 4 time caught up to her, and now she is screwed.

Would a smart person do this to themselves?

Im not promoting the kind of government assistance given out now.

I'm wondering if government assistance for those who truly need it the most after all other avenues are exhausted could be a good thing.
