It's nice to see the truth come to light and the house to lose...just for once.

That's why it's such a terribly written article. The whole premise of the article is the release of the emails, yet they aren't discussed until 3/4 of the way through the article. Instead the writer lets you know about the professor's boat.

The premise of the article is that the judge ruled against both parties and a settlement was reached. Nothing more is known. Lot of people in here making major assumptions.

Ivor is a grandstanding jackass who was making statements well outside his area of expertise. I am glad he is no longer around. About the only person worse than he is Bob Bea. get the headline grabbers out of the way and let the competent engineers fix the problem.

it's tough to fix the problem if you claim the root cause is something that isnt true.

let's start with a question...were the levees overtopped, or were there pressure bursts?

In the end, everything comes down to money

You can apply this to every single political argument or issue. You can also apply it to almost every other issue. There is always lots of smoke and mirrors to hide the real issue, but if you get to the bottom of most any issue today, it revolves around money.

The sooner you understand this, the easier it is to get to the bottom of these issues.

What a poorly written article.

That said, instances like this are not isolated and it aggravates me that the University continues to trip over itself. If the goal is to try to sell yourself as an esteemed institute of higher education, then this is the last thing you need.

re: Fired LSU Professor releases emails

From the pictures I just looked at(all with water still flowing or sitting), it looks like over-topping and blowouts both occurred. Hard to tell without pictures after the water drained.

My thinking behind that would be over-topping would have water washing away the substrate on the back side of the wall, causing it to basically tip over where the degradation was worst. A complete failure would chunks of the wall sitting everywhere with twisted metal rebar poking up along the break.

With over-topping, the wall would all basically be intact and it would've been a more controlled drop. A failure of the structure would have shite scattered everywhere, and look far from a controlled drop. It would've started with a small leak at high pressure and gradually(fast or slow) opened it up larger causing the broken wall to be spread out in a fan shape

I am on my phone, but if anyone has some dry pics that they can post, I will evaluate them free of charge. Feeling extra smart this morning because I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night

The levees did not fail from overtopping. There were several mechanisms for failure each having to do with overstress of the foundation or "I" wall design. IVH was not the only person saying this. He was the loudest and most shrill. People started getting tired of his act before Katrina but his actions immediately after Katrina cost him his job.

Totally predictable.

Besides the fact that he blamed the feds for it, LSU might have also been pissed that he didn't sit down and have a discussion with colleagues about the cause. Seems like everyone at LSU was dragging arse though so he came out with his findings. Enough time would've allowed whoever to change the studies or even manipulate the broken walls to the point where one couldn't make a decision on what happened.

Sort of like starting to clean up an accident before the investigators get there to study the scene

Is it really possible that people on here don't understand the relevance of your personal finances when you are claiming to be damaged by an adverse employment decision?

this is all everyone needs to know, i love LSU, I'm glad i went there, but just like every large establishment they have the tendency to try and be "big brother" and control everything and sometimes "big brother" loses, im glad this professor won

I was still in school during Katrina, but based on what I'm reading it sounds like the Professor just emailed these people out of the blue spouting his expertise and knowledge of the subject. No one is ever going to take too kindly to that.

It's hard to tell thanks to the all-star quality of the Advocate's reporting. But the question I'd like to know the answer to hits on what you say. Did someone reach out to him at some point, or did he just spout this off on his own.

re: Fired LSU Professor releases emails

Seems like it would be obvious what happened to me as soon as he got on site. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. I think my reasons above would be the defining factor, and people were looking for answers. Other engineers at LSU were dragging arse maybe to let the buzz die down a little, but who knows.

re: Fired LSU Professor releases emails

Funny thing about this is that I was just at a LSU presentation aimed at highly gifted potential freshmen (we are talking elite science and math kids from all over the US) and the LSU Chancellor on down kept bragging about the research freedom and reputation of LSU. These emails would seem to offer a different view. But, once again just as with this Holden/White mess, payoffs will occur to make it go away and the only loser is us taxpayers. No wonder we are broke.
