I am not surprised by the move but I thought some other things would have been done first. I guess it was a quick and easy thing to just get it out of the way.

he's not really doing anything but taking $5million now as a signing bonus rather than a roster bonus later. The team can spread it over the length of the contract capwise that way.

I think with that new 4 mil in space, plus cutting Smith and Vilma that would just get us even with the cap limit. When Harper restructures, that will tell us how much leftover we have to spend.

This + it's not even an "impressive" move by Loomis. The only newsworthy thing about this move is that it happened to Lofton. Either Brees, Evans, or both will be doing the same thing soon enough.

Brees has a ~17 million cap figure next year. He already has a signing bonus and I don't know if you can convert non-bonus payment into bonus money when a bonus is already in place.

That sucks for us since he was awful last year and the year before.

You can convert whatever the frick you want into a signing bonus. Roster bonus, base salary, MAYBE even a given year's prorated signing bonus (no team would ever be in such a bad position to even have to do that).

I think the big reason they started this off with Lofton was their way of saying "We want you to be a big part of this 3-4 defense in the future." It wasn't likely, but Lofton was a quasi-legit possibility at being cut (would save $2.6m). I'm still of the opinion that 4-3 LB/3-4 ILB is the best place to be terrible at on a defense (see: 2009 SB win) and it's the easiest position to find difference makers in the draft (see: last billion DROYs).

This. Payton is saying all the right things about the leader of the defense for the past 5 years. He's too soft for an ILB and too slow for OLB in a 3-4. He won't be on the team next year except possibly as a vet min backup.
