ain't no way in hell that anyone, I mean anyone who isn't trolling thinks the "Undiscovered Country" and "Nemesis" or "Insurrection" were better than Star Trek.
Also people say that the new movie was stupid becuse the Enterprise was built on Earth, but that is cannon.
It was built in San Fransico. It was the A that was built in lunar orbit and the D was built in Martian orbit.
Also in The Voyage home the HMS Bounty (IKS Kruge) landed on earth. Some ships had that capability and warp drive.

quote:I downloaded the torrent so i'm not 100% sure it was the first episode but it says it was episode 1 season 1. it was the episode where McCoy's old woman was actually that creature that needed salt and kept killing everyone and taking their form. It definitely seemed like there was going to be a lot of cheese in the series which in conjunction with the extremely outdated production value I don't know if i'll enjoy.
are you talking about the episode that Pike was the captain and Shatner was nowhere to be found?
IMO it mos def gets stronger after that one. Some are actually really damn good while others are cheese ball fluff. Overall I think its worth a watch.

That was the pilot. It is probably the worst episode. IMO the Gary Mitchel episode is where to start the series.
They are all on Amazon if you have Prime.

I know it is really old and production value doesn't always hold up well over time but if I didn't really enjoy the first episode should I give it up or will it get better?
It will get much better. There are great elements in those early episodes, but the chemistry between Kirk/Spock/McCoy is just not developed for several episodes. It will not get any less hokey, but the stories/characters develop fairly quickly. You can jump to "The Naked Time", if you want.

I'm not crazy about Nemesis.
But, it is like Citizen Kane compared to the terrible, terrible 2009 J.J. Abrams so-called Star Trek film.

That was "The Man Trap", but not as bad as "Spock's Brain".

The actual "second" pilot - the first episode filmed with Shatner as Kirk and Kelley as McCoy - "Where No Man Has Gone Before". The original pilot had Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike - it was called "The Cage" - it was not aired during the original run. The footage was incorporated into a 2-part episode called "The Menagerie".

Da frick? The only thing "terrible" about that movie was its use of lens flare. Otherwise, it was an outstanding reboot of the franchise with great character establishment and development that captured a lot of the spirit of TOS.

Obviously, as I started this thread, I disagree.

A brilliant use for the otherwise worthless footage. The pilot, without Kirk and McCoy, was just too different to be aired on its own.

Let me ask you this Ace, do you think the reboot is worse than "Star Trek Generations"?

Yes. For a lot of reasons. Mainly because it's not really Star Trek, can never really be Star Trek. Maybe they'll fix it with subsequent chapters, but I really doubt it. I expect many more well thought out action sequences, various and sundry combinations of phaser battles, melee combat, and snarky (particularly from Kirk) quips... and lens flares.
What I do not expect is legitmate, well thought out problem solving, dramatic tension, a moment where we can all learn something and feel better for the experience. The characters that care about each other, take care of each other, and so forth. That's what I was looking for. Where the characters were developed at all, they were specifically taken away from the strengths they had. Only the weaknesses, foibles and flaws were emphasized. Where there strengths were referenced at all seemed very contrived and deus ex machina in operation.
Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see it in the first film. It was unrecognizable as Star Trek, at least as I understand it. It wasn't what I was looking for and they're going to make 2 to 5 more of them.
I'm sad, but I'll move on.

The nerd rage is stupid. As a long time Trekkie (I watched the original series on network tv in the 60s.) I can tell you that the new movies hit a homerun when capturing the spirit of the original show.
The show first and foremost was about adventure, kirk getting laid, and mccoy being snarky.
Home fricking run.

Rob, that means a lot coming from you. With you taking this position, I only feel vindicated in really hating this movie.
