wouldn't that be bartering for a service? i'm not on spotify but don't you have to sift through ads to stay free? Spotify makes money by hosting the ads that you have to see and is content with that. i assume they pay the labels out of their ad revenue for the use of the music

Because you are listening to music whose licensing fee has been paid by Spotify. They recoup that money by getting advertisers to advertise on their service (like Pandora does). This is also why listening to the radio is not considered pirating.

hey everyone, I'm listening to Spotify free right now. it's perfectly legal. I don't pay a penny for it in actual cash. What am I not pirating instead?
After everything you ignored in my last post, only to say "Stay tuned", I'm done with the argument at this point. Besides, my kids are home from school. Nothing has changed through this whole thread. You guys are advocating the free and open thievery of everything anyone has ever created.

Unless it's an idea Wiki came up with that would make him rich ;)

Right. So my point is that people have innovated and figured out how to make a profit while giving away the product.

KFC, coca cola, and numerous other companies have kept their recipes a secret using compartmentalization. While not directly related to data property rights, it shows that the concept is possible. Had they sold the ingredients to their products somebody would have "stolen" it and made copies, hence they protected those ideas.
If you got the recipe, would you feel perfectly fine with mixing it up exactly as their recipe is written, slapping a MrCarton label on it, and selling it as your own stuff?

Could you be any more dense? I never claimed exclusivity on my idea. Furthermore, first movers do typically have a market advantage, so if I did come up with an idea, even if it was copied, I would still enjoy the first mover advantage. Like I said, these threads are funny.

This is grand. You know the information how to build a house is out there on the internet but people still pay others to do it? Just because you believe information that is public should be free doesn't mean you don't believe no one can profit from it.

You self-proclaimed yourself the winner of the argument. At that point, the continued reason to have any discussion with you was rendered moot.

Wealth is not lost in your scenario. Think about the Mp3 industry. Computers HArd Drives Ipods Smartphones Headphones Bluetooth headphones Arm bands to wear ipod ipod cases Ipod charges Ipod speakers All of those things have adapted to the market force of prevalent MP3 files. Money was made, a bunch of it.

They are still paying ASCAP and BMI, that's the point you are missing. Torrent sites, just like Spotify, allow access to entertainment except that they aren't paying the entertainers. Ergo, your attempts at making them equate to one another fall flat.

If you felt otherwise, you should address the issues. As of right now there is good points against you that you are wishing weren't there.

Yup. It's like they don't even consider things like quality, brand, etc.
