I define it as being very brave when not forced to be so. Generally to the tune of great personal sacrifice in the event of failure.(death, ruination)
Marquis de Lafayette has always been one of mine. Armed forces members who volunteer for things beyond their duty. Modern day "named" heroes are few and seldom celebrated. Pat Tillman comes to mind.
