It was way better than I thought it would be.

same here. I thought it would be some crappy MTV movie. Was pretty good.

Would have liked some answers though and some background on exactly what that was in that weird random hole
But I guess it took the Cloverfield approach where there is no backstory and no post-story

There is definitely a form of a back story in cloverfield. Just had to pay attention in the very end.

I thought Chronicle was much better than anticipated. Not sure how well it will hold up to repeated viewings. Doesn't seem like one of thse movies I would care to see over and over.

right after the movie released there was a BUNCH of discussion about the intricacies of the movie, for one it happens in the same world as Alias, this is for sure, which also means it happens in the same world as LOST as well. This is the case because of:
quote:
Tagruato is a Japanese mining company owned by Ganu Yoshida with oil rigs in the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, and Indian oceans using what they call "groundbreaking deep-sea drilling technology". Tagruato also own subsidiaries that deal in deep-sea genetic research (Yoshida Medical Research), advancing technology (Bold Futura), paraffin wax byproducts from their Petroleum reservoir (ParafFun! Wax Distributors), and a cold beverage company called Slusho!. The Tagruato corporation recently announced that one of their Atlantic Ocean oil rigs at Chuai Station has suffered an unknown altercation that "an eco-terror cell is responsible for the disturbance."
being in the movie, Slusho! was in Alias as early as season 1, and we know Alias was in the same universe as LOST because of crossovers.
Next, in the final scene we see that awhile before the events that unfolded in cloverfield, there was something that fell into the water:
quote:
Tagruato's subsidiary Bold Futura was involved in the hunt for a downed portion of the Japanese government's satellite ChimpanzIII. Bold Futura's satellite "Hatsui" was instrumental in the search and identification of the ChimpanzIII fragment off the coast of New York. However, due to CLOVERFIELD events, efforts to retrieve the ChimpanzIII fragment have been postponed. Bold Futura has since been unreachable, having closed all lines of communication.
Next, we have the actual history and coverup of what Tagruato was doing:
quote:
The object seen falling into the ocean is actually the Japanese government's ChimpanzIII satellite. The monster is a deep-sea creature with an unknown evolutionary history. The species apparently has a very long life-span, as the creature is still an infant during the events of the film, regardless of being alive for thousands of years. It grew to its massive size through consuming large amounts of Seabed's Nectar, a natural steroid-like substance which is very addictive and causes increased cell division and growth, and is used by Tagruato's subsidiary company, "Slusho!", for use as their secret ingredient in their frozen drink of the same name. At some point afterwords, the monster went into a sort of hibernation. The monster was first discovered by one of Tagruato's marine biologists, Kazui Ichigawa. Tagruato later stole his laptop and files and killed him and his family while they were on vacation in Daisetsu-San National Park, covering the assassination up as the result of a gas explosion in their trailer. Later, they used this information to locate the monster and built the Chuai station over top of it, claiming (falsely) that they were drilling for oil there. Shortly before the rig was supposed to open, Tagruato sent several submarines from the station down six miles to the ocean floor to study the monster. This action disturbed the creature from its slumber, and in a fit of rage and fear it destroyed the station, then proceeded towards Manhattan. The creature, upon arriving to New York City, attempts to eat the Statue of Liberty's head, then throws it into the city when it realizes the head isn't edible. Though initially confused, the military's subsequent attacks frighten and later enrage the monster. For approximately five hours and fifty-seven minutes,[1] it rampages throughout the city, destroying landmarks and battling the military. After several failed attempts to kill the monster, the government initiates the HAMMER-DOWN Protocol, in a last ditch effort to destroy it. According to film producer J.J. Abrams, the creature is officially "...a baby. He's brand-new. He's confused, disoriented and irritable. And he's been down there in the water for thousands and thousands of years".

Damn, very informative. I only knew that it was an infant, from the sea and scared.
Didn't realize Cloverfield was intertwined with those shows.
As for Chronicle, I enjoyed it. Didn't really know what to expect going into this movie, but was pleasantly surprised.
SPOILER
If that kid wanted everyone to leave him alone, he should of just flown away.

I think it was the old 'everybody was mean to me so now that i have power I'm gonna use it' type thing.

Except for the Driveshaft song playing in the background and a HINT at Sayid and some CIA stuff...
You're gonna have to fill me in if there's more to it than that.

This, too. Not ringing any bells.
Please and thank you.

Ok... I was thinking there was a more involved connection I somehow missed. JJ just had "dummy outfits" that he recycled. I just re-watched Alias last month and was trying to figure out how I missed it.
Thanks for clarification.
