Well, that's just plain stupid, you ignorant redneck, putting chocolate in chile... If you can't bring science and factual info. to the board, you deserve to be mocked, tarred and feathered...

Chocolate in chili doesn't seem odd at all to me, in fact it seems pretty consistent with the tradition of using chocolate in some moles. But hey, don't let that slow down your efforts to put your ignorance on display and act like an internet bad ass.

I think it "might" be a stupid idea But I haven't tried it so I don't know if it really enhances the flavor. Surely it does something. I suppose it's a matter of whether it improves the flavor or makes it worse. Maybe he's trying to make some redneck thai gumbo?

Otis is giving you good information. Chocolate has been put in chile and moles for a long time. It deepens the flavor because of the bitterness and goes well with the complex flavors of the other ingredients. I've never heard of peanut butter in it though. Next time I need to substitute something I think I'll just throw in peanut butter for the hell of it. It appears to be a new trend.

With that being said you need to use bittersweet chocolate and not the semisweet

But there's nothing wrong with mocking people who show up with stupid ideas that have no basis in theory or practice. If you want to maintain the credibility and integrity of this board, then it's appropriate to point out the inherent stupidity of what are, ultimately, stupid ideas.
Oh, really. And who decides what ideas are stupid? You? It sounds as though you're the one trying to be the "internet badass." If I enjoyed this kind of ridiculous posturing, I would stay in the OT. I am certainly not a chef nor an expert in haute cuisine, but I enjoy this board to learn from others who have more experience than I. However, I do not enjoy nor will I listen to those whose overly self important opinions include "mocking people" whom you deem as "stupid."

If a cake recipe calls for 1 cup of sugar and you don't have sugar so you add one cup of salt, would you think that's stupid? Salt is the opposite of sugar, so it would be stupid. You might think the salty cake is good, but you didn't make it as it was intended and it probably tastes like shite. It's the same with the peanut butter chile. The guy's recipe called for chocolate, which would add a bitter-sweet taste. He had no chocolate so he added peanut butter, an umami-salty taste. it's the opposite of bittersweet chocolate. He created the opposite flavor of what was intended by adding the chocolate. There is a reason the chile recipe calls for chocolate, just like there's a reason the cake recipe calls for sugar; it adds a certain layer of flavor that compliments the other flavors. So yes, picking the exact opposite flavor of what is called for in a recipe is stupid. You don't substitute one cup of salt for one cup of sugar.

I'm sort of with you but commercially produced peanut butter is sweet That's not subjectively speaking. That's objective. It's sweet.
