I'm using the infamous Beetle right now. I haven't had anyone hit me for more than 40k (1200 trophies), except if someone goes heavy Pekkas, Dragons, Heroes or all level 5 armies. Which until I upgrade my defense towers no design would stop them.
(Need a level 8 Townhall for the walls)

Yes, very common.
Actually, it's in your best interest to let someone take your town hall, because you'll get a 12 hour shield to protect the resources you get raiding people.
The theory is to worry about trophies AFTER you build up your base, and because lower trophy count means easier raiding.

Well thats what I've been doing awhile 
If you look at my base you will notice my storages are surrounded by mortars then walls, then more defense, and then walls
I haven't been hit by more than 50% in like 3 weeks
