I'm going to Rome at the end of March.

Hope Rome isn't being destroyed then.

But seriously.

People who attack another's religious beliefs are some of the saddest people around.

A search for Peter the Roman pulls up something about the next pope might be a black person named Peter Turkson. Anyone have the scoop on this?

The Catholic Church should have elected this guy as pope seven years ago.

quote:

The former archbishop of Milan and papal candidate Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini said the Catholic Church was "200 years out of date" in his final interview before his death, published on Saturday.

"The Church must admit its mistakes and begin a radical change, starting from the pope and the bishops. The paedophilia scandals oblige us to take a journey of transformation," he said in the interview.

Martini, famous for comments that the use of condoms could be acceptable in some cases, told interviewers the Church should open up to new kinds of families or risk losing its flock.

"A woman is abandoned by her husband and finds a new companion to look after her and her children. A second love succeeds. If this family is discriminated against, not just the mother will be cut off but also her children."

Now, that is the kind of pope I can get behind. The Catholic Church needs more men like him.

They spent a lot of money on buildings years ago you mean.

All of the Catholic Churches in my area are old and outdated facilities but rather than build new ones they get buy with what they currently have. They patch them up or add on to them but they aren't spending millions to do so.

The buildings in Rome aren't a proper representation for the average Catholic Church either.

Yeah, in Christian theology there's only one sin that's an automatic trip to hell and making fun of the pope isn't it.

I'm not a Catholic and have my own thoughts about the Catholic church, but there's no reason to ridicule (on this point) an organization that's been THE primary institution in Western civilization for two millenia.

It's all just vague Nostradamus type stuff based on a few cryptic lines, and nobody can verify that Malachy even wrote the last part. Even if he did, I don't think he specifically said that the end times would follow immediately after his last papal description, although some think it's implied.

It's mostly just fun conjecture like the Mayan 2012 story--i.e. stuff that everybody knows about, but that nobody really changes his life over.

YEah, see, this is what I was talking about.

A modern Catholic.
That's what we need.
John XXIII and JPII were steps in the right direction, but Benedict XVI was a step back.

The church could troll the masses and choose a black pope to conjure up some mass hysteria

I hear ya. I thought it was slightly weird that the odds on favorite (betting sites and other "news" outlets) is some guy who is literally named Peter though. Creepy.
