I looked into Ridgebacks in the past. I stayed away from them for all the reasons already listed.
The second best dog I ever owned was a black GSD from working lines. Very smart dog. Very trainable. Shed like a mofo.
The best dog I've ever had is the Doberman I have now. Even smarter than the GSD. Better with my wife and kid. Still sheds, but the hair is short and there's no undercoat.
