Looking at our WR's in 2013

I know we've yet to make our cuts, and there is still FA and the draft, but I don't forsee us making a huge splash in either at the position, although I think it's likely we draft a WR at some point.
I'll include TE's in the discussion, just because of how much we use them in the passing game.
12 Colston, Marques WR 6-4 225 29 7 Hofstra
86 Fayson, Jarred WR 6-0 213 25 1 Illinois
17 Givens, Chris WR 6-2 203 24 R Miami (Ohio)
18 Hakim, Saalim WR 5-11 188 23 R Palomar College
19 Henderson, Devery WR 5-11 200 30 9 Louisiana State
16 Moore, Lance WR 5-9 190 29 7 Toledo
13 Morgan, Joseph WR 6-1 184 24 2 Walsh
87 Parker, Preston WR 6-0 200 25 3 North Alabama
15 Roby, Courtney WR 6-0 189 30 7 Indiana
14 Tanner, Andy WR 6-0 183 24 1 Midwestern State
88 Toon, Nick WR 6-4 218 24 R Wisconsin
The tight ends:
80 Graham, Jimmy TE 6-7 265 26 3 Miami (Fla.)
81 Higgins, Michael TE 6-5 242 25 2 Nebraska-Omaha
85 Thomas, David TE 6-3 248 29 7 Texas
I've put in bold the ones I know for sure will be here next year. I'm not up to date on who will be under contract this year, so if you do know, let me know and I'll update.
Nick Toon was wowing people in training camp last year, but he showed some inconsistent hands, and was IR'd before the season began. A lot of people thought his injury wasn't serious and could have played this year. He's a big body guy with deceptive speed. I'm hoping he develops into a faster version of Colston.
However, looking at the roster right now, we have a bunch of possession receivers, except for Morgan. As of right now he's our lone deep threat, as Henderson completely disappeared last year. Again I'm not sure if he's a FA or if he's on the last year of his contract.
I remember hearing good things about Givens last year, but I can't really remember specifics. I like Andy Tanner a lot, but again he's another possession receiver.
This might be a terrible thing. I thought we got away from the short to intermediate passing game in the last half of the year. We kept trying to force the deep ball. We got away from being methodical and moving the chains. To be an effective offense we're going to need big body targets with sure hands.
Still, we'll need at least one other speedster to run off coverage so our short/intermediate passing game will work.
In regards to the tightends, I really like what I've seen from Higgins so far. I think he can develop in to an above average #2. He has excellent size and above average speed. Graham is going to need a good dose of Payton's foot up his arse. I know he was dealing with a wrist injury last year, but a lot of his problems seem to me to be a lack of focus.
Thoughts? Comments?

I don't quite remember that. I don't think its a given 100% he makes the roster without showing improvement from what i recall last offseason.
Moore needs to maybe restructure a bit. Maybe colston can give back a mill since he can't make a pro bowl.
David Thomas needs to be cut or restructure severely. Higgins might be coming along but its clear we need to add some Tight End depth here IMO especially if we part with DT>

Has Toon healed up from that pretend injury?

You don't remember him "wowing" people, or having the dropsies?

I think they'll draft a WR at some point or sign one in FA. Very shallow there.

wowing. at least on the football field.

I said he was wowing in training camp. He dropped a TD pass in the only game he played in (I think it was his only game).

I know what you said. It's been a while and i just don't really recall it. I know people were impressed with his stature and all but I just remember him having a rough time in TC. Not saying you're wrong, i just don't remember.

might finally be The Year of The Tanner
patty, your all in one contract resource
Always a chance of drafting an overwhelming value WR pick (like Toon) after the 3rd Rd. I haven't spent much effort looking at them but for the right value I like Swope TxAM, Boyce TCU, and even think Russel Sheppard wouldn't be a bad late round flier. I think he could have a more productive NFL career than he did at LSU. (Of course, that wouldn't take a lot)

we can draft Justin Hunter with our 2nd round pick.

that is, the make believe one. Last year's make believe 2nd Rder Lavonte David to the Bucs still pisses me off.

Truthfully, I think Chris Givens will have the best opportunity of everyone to make the roster and be a player in this league. He's 6'2, got decent size and good speed.

Need to keep a 2nd tight end. Wendy's is still solid but cheaper might be better.
Keep Roby. Money on special teams and not too shabby when given a chance to catch a ball.
Devery, love ya, bye-bye.

Probably my favorite Saints nickname.

Side Thought, if our WR roster looked like any combination of the following:
Colston- 7th Round
Moore- UDFA
Morgan- UDFA
Toon- 4th Round
Givens- UDFA
Roby- Someone else's 3rd Round.
Pretty damn impressive stockpile of mostly nobodies.

Which goes to show you what the value of a good QB can do to improve those around him.

always baffled by this. He does look good when given WR reps in preseason. In 4 1/2yrs here he has 2 catches. Seems like he could get some snaps just as an occasional change of pace.

Henderson is an UFA, it pains me to say that I don't see us resigning him. I'm looking forward to seeing if Nick Toon can be serviceable. Hopefully we pick up another deep threat in the late rounds of the draft or as a undrafted free agent to go along with Morgan.

As good and deep as our corp has been they have also been getting slower. No separation forcing tight throws and WR's taking more hits.
I think they have seen this because of the pic ups that have been under the radar are all speedsters.
Joe Morgan 4.44 (lock to make team)
Preston Parker 4.52
Jarred Fayson 4.39
Chris Givens 4.41
