Two carriers in such a small area is difficult enough, between the escort force and the replenishment ships, there is hardly enough room to maneuver. Would it be nice to have 6 Carrier Air Wings in the Gulf should Iran get fresh with us? Sure! However in such a small area the ability to operate en masse is limited. Plus we have enough land bases in Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi to compensate should shite get real.

My contractors employ PLENTY of former enlisted men and women. I've worked with some technical specialists from the USAF that run circles around their officer counterparts and get paid for it.

We have had several military missions that certainly proved unimportant. Not the least of which was LBJ's Viet Nam.
We should absolutely support the men and women in the military but we should be very, very critical of those that would put those men and women in harm's way. We have an obligation to question and criticize war efforts of the politicians. It sickens me that Obama gets a free ride on his expansion of our war effort.
We should change our foreign policy today and start reducing our world wide policeman obligation--Israel, Taiwan, NATO, UN, SEATO all should stand on their own.
We have screwed up in the Middle East so many times that our reputation is tarnished there. The Iranians hate us for installing the Shah in 1953 after they had adopted a republic form of government. All the Arabs are suspect of support of Israel. We bribe the Palestinians and Egyptians and Saudis and Jordanians.
Let's get the heck out of there tomorrow.

If I had to guess it is because he has done more to draw down the troops, even though he has been more aggressive in exerting force in places such as Pakistan and Lybia, while showing retraint in Syria because of 1-A total lack of cohesive opposition and 2-The fact that many of the rebel fighters in Syria are the same ones who would jump back and forth over the border with Iraq in 2005.

Couldn't agree more. The Saudi's support us because they know that we will not let their regime fall to an aggressor as long as we have an open valve to their oil (see: Iraq 1991) As long as we blindly support Israel no matter what they do to Palestinians (right or wrong) we will continue to face a hostile Arab world, and unlike pissing off say the French or Spanish... the Arabs fight.

Yeah, I'm behind what "really" needs to be cut...and its everything. We need to cut back on EVERYTHING, and I feel like our military spending, which is far and away higher than every other country on Earth, is a prime candidate for significant cuts. Lets roll back some of the bases slung all over the globe, and refocus and centralize ourselves in the U.S. They can secure OUR border, instead of Afghanistan's, if nothing else.
