So how do you feel about the younger postal workers? The ones over the past 10-15yrs that are absolutely fricking horrible?

The ones that don't give a shit

My office must be an exception. The younger folks are excellent employees.

It's the guys with one foot out of the door that may fall closer to your description...and no, I'm not quite there yet.

That is a very good question... Are the savings from Salary savings or infrastructure savings, by not having to run equipment that extra day

I will give them "some" credit for the decision but it should have happened years ago.

Blame congress for that, not the postal service. They privatized it and then shackled it with providing all of these archaic services that none of the competitors offer. The next thing they need to do is close down the post offices in every one-horse town in the country. Good luck with that.

I am making an assumption, but I would imagine that most personnel are hourly wage earners, especially if union. Weekend would pay a 1.5 differential, so by cutting Saturday delivery you save the differential plus infrastructure costs. Technically their hourly wage is not being cut just the opportunity to earn the differential.

Saturday delivery means either overtime or an extra rotating shift to handle it. It's an economy when deliveries are limited to just one 40-hour shift.

Must be because EVERY post office I have ever gone to or postal worker that I have had contact with over the past 10yrs or so has been absolute shite...

The last good things I remember about the postal service was as a kid.

They've already begun to do a lot of that.

What really messed things up was Congress passing the Postal Accountabilty and Enhancement Act in 2006. This required the USPS to make 104 billion dollars in payment to prepay retirement funds to cover the next 75 years...and to do so in a 10 year span.

We don't get a pay differential for working weekends. We do get OT after 8 hours and working off days / holidays.

this is a wash if they are still going to do package delivery on Saturday. they still have to have people there staffed and delivery people on the street.

Shut it all down on Sat and then maybe that would put a dent in it.

They need to ease into a 2 or 3 day delivery schedule over the next several years.

Paradigm shifts happen.

That was the original plan. Too many customers complained that Saturdays were the only days that they were home and available to receive packages at home without having to go to the P.O. to pick them up. Then, the idea was floated to maybe shut down one day in midweek and too many businesses complained. So, this was the compromise.

Agree... Mail, for the most part, is a dinosaur.

EastBank....what % of the mail is mass/junk mail and what % of revenue does it provide? I am making an assumption here so bare with me, but I would imagine that personal mail service represents a very small % of total mail and most people are able to receive and pay bills electronically, so it appears to me the postal service is being used primarily to deliver mass/junk to homes that eventually ends in the trash.

I couldn't give you exact numbers but from personal experience it's far more advertisement oriented mail now. The majority of businesses and older people on my route still prefer to use regular mail, especially because of fears of online identity theft.

Many companies give you the paper / paperless option these days. Then again, as I tell customers, anytime that you do anything electronically, be it on the internet or do things such as using the electronic ticket counter at the casino, you're potentially taking someone's job away. Consider that the next time that you gripe about unemployemnt or people on welfare.
