Yea, I like a good cane knife to but since OP was looking for a good machete, I let him know where to get one. Have seen many machetes break in two because they were not hard enough. Have had an Ontario machete for many years and have never had any problems. Recently sharpened it and it is as good as new. A good cane knife was my weed eater in my younger days. That's all we had.

Get one with a hook in it. "Brush hook".

You'll thank me later.

I had a buddy buy one of those during forestry camp. He used it for half of the day and left it at the camp after lunch. It was just a huge pain to lug around and didn't even work that well.

Best machete I have ever used was my pow pows that he got issued in Korea. The blade was thicker than any other one I have ever used. It was the perfect hardness because it sharpened fairly easily and held an edge really well. After 50 years, it got worn down to maybe 3/5 of the original height, but still worked very well.

Dropped it in the bayou one day and spent 3hrs diving trying to find it. My dad wouldn't let me get out of the water until I did.

In addition to a good, heavy machete, get a hatchet like Fiskars or something

I also own a weedeater with a blade. I prefer to use it if I have to cut a bunch of saplings. Can cut flush so you don't have a field of punji sticks.

I use large snips and they work wonders. Little effort and it gets a lot done in a hurry.

No doubt, but my back starts hurting if I'm clearing a shooting lane or something.

This is what I do, did not know there were any machete connoisseurs.

Having cut hundreds of boat loads of cane/brush in my life, you come to appreciate a good one and despise the crappy ones.

This is the best tool I have used. I have the Gerber version and the only difference is the Gerber comes with a belt sheath.

re: Machetes

Alright, guys, I gave up really making a decision and just picked one. I went with the cold steel heavy machete, because it looks like the cane knife I had when I was a kid, and several of you recommended it. I got the one-handed version though. I'll see if I can put a real edge on it and try it out.
