Why Can't the United States Assemble a Championship Soccer Team?

Quick question.
Why is it that the United States cannot assemble a team that is able to win the World Cup?
Let's be honest. Soccer consist of little more than running and kicking the ball. Surely with all the contact sports we play in this country, we would have caught up with the rest of the world, right?
I realize it's true that soccer is not mainstream amongst the youth of America, but I'm pretty sure our World Cup Club athletes have been playing futbol their entire lives, akin to their foreign counterparts.
I'm sure this is a question you all kick back and forth (lulz) everyday, but I have never ventured over here. I am curious as to the root of America's soccer woes.

There are lots of problems, but in a nutshell, here it is:
1. We have no soccer culture or history.
2. Kids grow up playing soccer as a youth sport (it's the most popular youth sport in the country) but then give it up in high school for football, basketball, baseball, etc.
3. The way we develop talent is terrible. The pay to play model (see: select/club soccer) eliminates A LOT of our soccer playing population (see: the poor, including a lot of our hispanic population).
4. We lack the technical know how of the Europeans. We don't develop our talent nearly as well as they do.
5. Our domestic league, though improving, is still young, as is our soccer academy system.
We aren't going to catch up with the world overnight. It will take a long, long time to get on the same level as the soccer powerhouses of the world, but the popularity of the sport is skyrocketing and I have no doubt that our teams will continue to be more and more competitive.

Rather than start a new thread... is there a way to see a players Overall Rating when they have an expired contract? It does that obnoxious red block over the spot their ratings normally are...
Probably just missing something but It's not in the bio etc..

America's current player pool does not have the coordination to run and kick well enough to win a World Series
For 2014, USSF must make approaches to high-level athletes like Lebron James and Calvin Johnson to have any chance at winning

Why can't we assemble the worlds best rugby or cricket teams? We play football and baseball so well. Just makes no sense man!!!
