Defense wasn't good enough, not with or without Payton.

This is all conjecture, but I disagree. The performance of the defense is linked (not completely) to the performance of the offense. The entire team was effected by the suspensions and the loss of Payton.

ETA: With Payton at the helm there is no way our defense gives up 7000+ yards.

Nothing Goodell did to the Saints caused the defense to be the worst in NFL history. That distiction rest squarely with the players and coaches.

All you have to do is review the KC game and the performance of the defense in that game say's it all for the season.

imagine the spotty play calling in those games we lost. GB, KC, 2nd ATL, Carolina (x2).

do you honestly think we wouldn't have won such close games with SP? I think otherwise, having a full staff to make adjustments is better than half a staff. we saw that with vitt coming back and letting kromer work with the line. now imagine if we had a head coach. the joy.

Hopefully, they aren't on the field enough to do so.

I agree with this. SP being there changes the face of everything. Maybe he overrules a gameplan change, or tells Spags what adjustment to make in game. His presence alone makes them a better team.

Now, can I make an argument that they would have been superbowl contenders? No. But, they have a better shot.

Dude, we were the worst defense ever. On a 7-9 team. If anything, it is a miracle our offense got us to 7-9. Now, a couple of games are on the offense, but when you have to score 30 points every game to win, it's the defense. Detroit was 0-16 and theren't as bad as our defense was.
