It still is looked down upon. Hell, I got tons of shite up north just for saying the word y'all, let alone my accent.

What was so bad about the article? I saw nothing condescending in it.

You make a good point. If one reads the article carefully, it's not really a condemnation. It's an interesting analysis and, in fact, it somewhat admires the South. The guy perhaps paints with a broad brush in making his point, but no big deal.

In a political definition, usually means they hold different beliefs than the other guy.

At the same time, the Southern way of life began to be embraced around the country until, in a sense, it came to stand for the “real America”: country music and Lynyrd Skynyrd, barbecue and nascar, political conservatism, God and guns, the code of masculinity, militarization, hostility to unions, and suspicion of government authority, especially in Washington, D.C. (despite its largesse). In 1978, the Dallas Cowboys laid claim to the title of “America’s team”—something the San Francisco 49ers never would have attempted.
i've got a grip and i also see some arse clown at the new yorker bragging with his buddies about how great his farts smell and portraying the south as a bunch of backwoods hillbillies that the rest of the country should either laugh at or ignore. which in my opinion is bull shite. the article is a fricking joke.

Which parts of that quote are inaccurate? Of course he doesn't mean every single person in the South thinks that way, but he's not really off base about the prevailing culture. And in fact, he's actually referring to the rest of the country, rather than the South, and what it embraced. I'm born and raised in the Deep South and like it here. I don't see any reason to get upset about the article. Unless you're one of those guys who just can't stand those high falutin' yankee smartass motherfrickers no matter what.

i agree they're hypocrites about freedom, but that paragraph was about the conservatives pushing for governmental intervention for social progress, because apparently at one point in the south's history this is what conservatives stood for

And to the OP . . . that is not what the article actually says. That's your interpretation of the article.

I have a feeling some of the posters didn't really read it carefully.

So can any magazine. So what? It's an urban oriented magazine based in the Northeast . . . New York-centric to be specific . . . that has a national audience and readership. Although, interestingly, it has been a platform for a lot of Southern writers.
