We don't even know who's gonna be running it yet, but for me, I just want a physical and disciplined defense. By that I mean wrapping up, running through the tackles, launching off the ball etc. I know plays are still gonna be made because we don't have great talent, but if we can at least play sound defense (maybe that requires a stripped down approach), it may just be enough to get back to the big game.

yep

I personally don't expect much.. I don't care if it's super simple and kind of easy to beat, but sound fundamentals. It really blows my mind that professional players being paid millions of dollars per year don't do the basics, like wrap up.

To not give up 7000 yards!

Seriously though, fundamentals have lacked the last few seasons. I never cared about giving up big plays, but making the plays that should be made are absolutely crucial. Making teams drive 70+ yards in 9+ plays all game is very difficult on an offense. On top of that, making a tackle for a gain of 4 instead a gain of 9 sometimes saves a drive. With the offense we have, turnovers are the key. Stealing possesions. They won in 2009 not because of a great, or even good, defense. They won due to turnovers at the utmost opportune moments.

An adequate pass rush and a FS who can make big plays is what I'm hoping for. If there is any money, I would be throwing it at Jarrius Byrd. He could be the guy they need back there.

yeah pretty much. it is tougher to run the ball on a 3-4 defense too. I can put with all the passing yards to be honest. With all of the rule changes in favor of the offense and the fact that teams usually have to score a lot of points to keep up with us, its almost impossible to avoid.

Not being able to stop the run is the most demoralizing thing to a defense.

And you are absolutely right about guys needing to wrap up when they tackle, its almost a lost art every where you look in the NFL today.

Personally I have two. Like you said, we need a discipline and tackling overhaul. But another is to actually have some sort of disguise to our defense. Williams was absolutely horrible at disguising his blitzes and Spags, well, his defense was bad at just about everything. Thankfully pressure disguise is easier in a 34 so I'm pretty hopeful on that one.

Oh and not being a stubborn bitch when blitzing out of your mind and giving 10 yard cushions on the outside isn't working. I'm looking at you GW.

In theory the 3-4 is suppose to be strong against the pass and the 4-3 is suppose to be strong against the run. It just turns out a lot of 3-4 teams are stout against the run.

A top 20 total defense in yards and scoring. It would make a huge difference.

I want to see better tackling

So many times we would have multiple defenders all whiff on a tackle attempt on the same play.

Better defending off tackle runs, or cut back/bounce outside runs. We get killed on the edge too easily. More discipline in your lanes and assignments, more athleticism on the outside.

Asking for more QB pressure, and better hands/ballhawk in the Secondary is pushing it

Punishing tackling. I see San Fran play and I just cry. Also, I want a secondary that has some sense of where the ball is and doesn't just follow the receiver around like a lap dog.

This. We just need to get to the middle of the pack in defense to be a Super Bowl contender.

Yep. Statistically, our defense that year was average at best. But we ranked 2nd (behind Green Bay) in turnover margin.

Have to get back to getting the ball to our offense.

This x10000000000. So many times this year our corners could have had interceptions if they had just turned to find the ball. We need a sound position coach for our defensive backfield. They are terrible.

A Top 20 D is all they need, but I would love to see a Top 15 D. I really want to see QB pressure, lots of sacks. Oh, and for them to remember how to fricking tackle!
