re: Greatest college basketball program of all time

Either but UCLA. They are a product of Wooden. I know multiple UCLA alums; they barely know UCLA has a basketball program, as do most people in CA. Correction, people know UCLA was great, once upon a time, but simply don't care, and didn't care then (they played in like a 4,000 seat gym when them were winning NCAA championship after championship). Their attendance hovers around 9,000 a game now a days. UCLA is a great athletic program because they have the population to make a great athletic program (poor blacks [hoops, track, et. all] + rich whites [water polo, softball, et. all]) but no one in Westwood, greater LA or CA gives a single shite.

"Didnt have a single losing season from 1949-2002"

This one hurts the most. We now have three losing seasons thanks to Howland and Lavin. Fricking A.

I don't think a single football program in the country can claim to have gone 52 years without a losing season. Christ.

How can you say he should of won in 08? Memphis ran them off the court. Oh and shame on the OP for not mentioning Ed O'Bannon

John Wooden is probably the greatest college basketball coach of all timee

He's not only the greatest basketball coach of all-time, he's definitely in the pantheon of greatest coaches of all-time. In fact, as far as American sports are concerned, I'd put him at #1 or #2 overall. You take what Bear Bryant did at Alabama in football, multiply it by ten, and you get John Wooden.

Their program started when coach k got there

They had actually made it to the Final vs. Kentucky 2 years before K got there and won 24 games the year before K got there.

K's first 3 years were bad enough coming off that success that he almost got fired.

But he's elevated a good basketball program into a great one, so to the initial point I agree there not quite as high up there in sustained greatness over history as the other programs mentioned.

Ucla is head and shoulders above whoever you want to put in the number 2 slot, imo

re: Greatest college basketball program of all time

Its sort of strange to see conversations about how one program is 'one era only', and has not 'sustained greatness', when UCLA's program's highest success is focused on mostly a 15 year window. I'm not saying it doesn't make them the greatest program ever, I'm just saying that it's not terribly wise to criticize other programs as 'come latelies' to the conversation.

I do think people tend to lose Kansas and Indiana basketball in the conversation about 'the rest', though (3 titles, 6 national runner ups, 14 Final Fours, and 3 or more conference titles every decade of the program's existence, excluding the 80s for Kansas; 5 titles, 1 NRU, 8 Final Fours) -- neither is anything to sneeze at; Duke, North Carolina, and Kentucky have been the statistical cream of the crop since 1975; if you really want to have a 'come lately' program talk, UCONN is a better candidate than Duke or anyone else (3 titles in the last 13 years, and not a single Final Four before); Michigan State is building a depth of resume, but still has a ton of work to do to add to their title tally before reaching the Top 5 program conversation.

Ucla has a few more championships. Kentucky has a lot more wins. I'll go with ucla, but its not by some huge margin like people are saying.

well kansas is ahead of duke and slides in at #4 so no one should be "losing them". they also might be a damn 3OT loss in the 1950s away from #3 over unc.

UCLA had far and away the best stretch but I'd put UK number 1. All but one of UCLA's championships came within an 11 year period. UK has titles in 5 decades.

fricking everything. it's not exactly an unpopular opinion. it seems like it is on this thread but i think tons of college basketball people would have kentucky at one. they have it all.

quote:

Whens the last time won a title again?????

they have both won a title in the last five years and are both obviously the most consistent programs. this is more fact than opinion, honestly.

That's like saying, "don't let Bama's current success distort your view of them historically". Both programs current success is just part of a history of success.

lol this. "based on what". We're talking about fricking kentucky. They aren't exactly an overnight success story.
