George Lucas, and the $4.4 billion of box office his movies have earned, doesn't even know you exist. Your opinions with respect to his movies will have exactly zero influence on future episodes.

Why does everyone assume that the franchse will only follow one storyline? There is so much Star Wars literature in existence that Disney will probably be inundated with proposals to make episodes based on existing stories.

Unless this is literally the worst film series ever made, it will break box office records.

Star wars is a world wide brand.

My thoughts are that it couldn't possibly get worse, but I do fear that disney won't take it too dark for fear of damaging their reputation. I hope that Disney is attached in name only and lets Abrams do his work

Not sure what this even means. Some of the most disturbing children's films are Disney flicks.

I do. But I'm keeping my hopes up. I try not to hate on movies before they come out.

Reading back thru the last couple of pages makes me realize I would hate to be some of your movie buddies. This board continues to show how internet cool it is.

I'm sure there are some of you that legitimately don't like Star Wars. I can completely understand why people were not happy with Ep. 1-3. Episode 1 was really disappointing looking back, but I still skipped school to go see it opening day and ended up seeing it 4 times in the theater. Why? Because its Star Wars. It was a huge part of my childhood. I was too little to see any of the original movies in the theater, but I had the toys. I saw the Spec Editions. I read all of the EU books through the Yuzzan Vong war.

I hated Christansen as Anakin, but I didn't think the last two movies were bad. I actually enjoyed Episode III, especially the duel between Obi-wan and Anakin.

I very much enjoyed Abrams Star Trek movie. I see no reason why he couldn't bring a fresh and interesting take on the Star Wars Universe. The EU has shown that there are unlimited stories that can be told post Ret of the Jedi that are very entertaining. Its even proven that you can introduce new characters that become even more essential than the Trilogy Characters.

IMO, Abrams should recast Luke, Leia, Han, etc if they intend on continuing that story. I dont think you'll get a good movie with an old Luke, Leia, and Han while skipping forward 40 or so years from Jedi.

Think about the backstory required. You have to assume that, after the Battle of Endor, the Empire didn't surrender. They still control the majority of the galaxy. I'd be very disappointed if the crawl just said, "Its been 40 years since the battle of Endor. The Emperor died, the Empire surrendered, Han and Leia got hitched, Luke got a dog, everything is peachy, until a new threat...."

I have a question that doesn't merit a new thread so I'll put it here. I am not anything CLOSE to a star wars guy, and don't really even know much about the franchise at all, so this may be a totally easy or obvious answer but I genuinely don't know.

When the original 3 movies came out, why were they titled 4,5, and 6? Did Lucas have it in his head that someday down the road he would introduce another 3 movies as a prequal?

To be honest, I've never had somebody explain this to me either.

The main thing to keep in mind is not the fact if they will suck or not...they will still set records at the box office...due to the fact that people will want to know what happens to the characters and where the story goes from Episode 6.

I have always been told something like this

quote:

I will follow along with George's "outline" of the saga even though many parts of what he says now can be proven untrue by things he has said in the past ... suffice it to say that the 6 movie saga we have now bears very, very, VERY little resemblance to what he started out with as in the beginning Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker were two separate characters, Luke & Leia were NOT brother & sister & there was this mysterious "other Skywalker" that would show up to help Luke defeat the Emperor & his henchman Darth Vader.

At first there was actually 12 episodes to the story, Lucas wanted to tell it in the same fashion as the old Flash Gordon serials. Realizing that it wouldn't work that way he cut it down to 9 episodes. The first trilogy was to be about the rise & fall of Anakin Skywalker, the second trilogy was to be about the rise of Luke Skywalker & the redemption of Anakin Skywalker, the third was to be about the "other Skywalker".

Lucas started with ep IV, & NO ... it was NOT called ep IV when it first came out, because of all the parts of the story it was the only one that could be seen as a "stand alone" movie ... meaning it had a clear beginning and a clear ending. If the movie were to have flopped, as most ... including Lucas to a certain extent ... thought it would we would never have to know that there was more of the story to tell. Not many people know that the movie was actually in theaters very briefly in the summer of 1976, at that time it was called "The Star Wars". I have tried to no avail to find out why it was yanked out of theaters that summer. When it returned in the summer of 1977 it was called "Star Wars". The 30th Anniversary Star Wars Saga Source Book contradicts the public records of Calif that year but in a nutshell, when Lucas realized he had a monster hit on his hands he knew that he would be able to tell more of his story on film and the name was legally changed 01/01/79 to Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope. This is also when he worked out a sweet heart of a agreement with FOX that gave him exclusive rights to the story itself & to any kind of mass market toys, games, action figures etc ... the deal was unheard of at the time as there had never been a time when you could go to Micky D's and get a Darth Vader glass with your order. Not only did Lucas create a movie that would change the film industry but he also was the first to make money off from selling items that represented things in the movies.

So again in a nutshell, ep IV was made first because it is the only one of the movies that can be seen as a stand alone movie. The other ones depend greatly on things we find out in the other movies.

I don't see it like that. I see it more like the opening crawl would be:

ITS BEEN 40 YEARS SINCE THE BATTLE OF ENDOR
MOMMY DIEd
DADDY CRIED
INKY PINKY
PONKY

FTFY

He ruined Star Trek (I know I'm in the minority, but I'm not shutting up.)

The good news (I guess), is that he is a Star Wars fan and cannot do as much damage to the franchise as Lucas himself did with Cartoon Menace/Send in the Clones/Revenge of the Whiny-a$$ Bitch who is definitely not fit to fill Darth Vader's shoes.

I ultimately don't care, as it is extremely unlikely I'll be watching any more Star Wars or Star Trek films. Everything great ends and is replaced by $hitty, mass-produced, sophomoric crap.
