This does not correlate to 'dying in the streets'.

Government programs in and of themselves do nothing without having a capital base from which to take from in order to distribute. Poverty is only alleviated by capital accumulation and advancement in production.

I agree with this. Social programs don't alleviate poverty. They simple make poverty a "livable" situation.

They can also increase the general cost of living by their existence. For instance, the existence of Medicare and Medicaid within our healthcare system greatly raises the costs for both the poor and those not subsidized by government.

Interestingly, Iceland seems to be doing well.

Exactly, right after they lost their asses in OUR markets.

The European countries didn't do that, and they're still suffering. And we just point at them like it's their system that's fricked - when we injected the aids.

How can poor countries provide welfare if everyone is poor? Welfare requires the rich to subsidize the poor.

Wrong, in the sense that inability to find a job caused death...that is up to the individual who made the choice to die in the streets due to drug use, alcohol, crime, etc.
Welfare causes dependence, it is killing America, should never have been allowed to become a long term solution.

Cart before horse. The countries with extensive welfare programs were prosperous FIRST. IE, prosperity predates welfare programs. Poor countries can't afford such things. Prosperous countries, by definition, have uneven prosperity leading to class envy, and hence, the whole "gimme some of what he got" attitude.

This our culture, not just the culture of the poor. The poor are just a part of the the whole culture.

Money, sugar anf fat. That's what our culture craves. It's animalistic at its core.

Indeed the argument can be made that welfare exists soley to include the poor in our obsessive consumptive culture. Welfare money is not removed from the economy, it goes right back to Walmart, Exxon, etc... The poor didn't pass those welfare laws, the rich white men did. They don't want 100% employment, that would drive up the cost of labor.

Where do Cuba and North Korea fit in with your premise? Where were the Soviet Union and its satellites? There is, or was, no prosperity in any of those countries, much less extreme prosperity.
