It was a relative term. Relative to the S&P 500/Dow.

the portfolios of those funds either exceed or don't exceed the market return. that's not a difficult concept.

Right

But why should I care about that?

There is a shite ton of money in those funds. If they aren't hitting their marks, people aren't going to feel more wealthy. And people don't feel wealthy, they don't spend. And when they spend, growth is slow.

Kidding?

Compared to what? You?
Well of course, but that's a given
Comparison is to relative market indicies.

Right

So if they're underperforming compared to the market indices when those indices are doing exceptionally well, it doesn't mean that those funds aren't making healthy returns.

He stated it as if the news was somehow terrible. So some funds were poorly managed and investors didn't get sensational returns while the markets have been soaring. Cry me a fricking river. They're still making money.

So if a market index increases by 14% and the fund that you invested in "only" returned 12% you aren't increasing your wealth?

I mean seriously, how fricking stupid are you people?

Since underperforming IS a relative term, it's worth pointing out that even if you're underperforming these market indices by 10 or 15% you're STILL making a healthy ROI. It's just not as great as it could have been had you invested in a fund that beat the market.

Right. So we're just going to arbitrarily truncate all date from January 1 till now and ignore those gains.

Makes sense.

Yeah. Retirement accounts have really taken a beating over the last 3 or so years

It doesn't matter. It's not even about the actual returns. It's about investor/consumer psychology.

You may be happy, but investors are in the business of maximizing returns. If others are doing better, they aren't going to feel that great about it.

Most people don't feel like they've gained wealth, but are merely earning back wealth lost.

Again, you can't think in absolutes, you have to take into account investor psychology.

It probably has something to do with deceleration.

Great. Now we're basing all of this on what people "feel" like has happened and not the actual facts which are in plain sight for anyone to see.

Yeah it sucks that a lot of people lost their shite in 2008 but it IS coming back. It's better than it not coming back right?

re: Are we finally out of the recession?

Man we should all mull around and slit our wrists over trillions of dollars of wealth being recovered over the last couple years.

There is no way that could possibly be a good thing right?

That's the reality of the way market works.

Tell that to the people still out of work
Tell that to the people who haven't gotten a raise in a while
tell that to the people who are working a job they are overqualified

if you lose all your shit, and only got half of it back, you may be happy about it, but most are still going to feel slighted

I'm no John Locke but in my view if the legal industry is thriving then you can bet there is healthy commerce taking place. The legal industry sucks right now. No firms are hiring and many are selling out, closing up shop or laying off attorneys. American Legal Search has had several long term head hunters quit recently because the market is so bad
Less business = less need for lawyers.
