It's really not though. I'd say about 98% of people who have seen it, love it. Sorry you're the 2% who can't appreciate greatness.

Plenty of acclaimed or "great" movies are polarizing. Some of the ones mentioned I love but am not surprised other people would hate, like Napoleon dynamite.

The real surprise to me was shawshank redemption. Even if you don't think it's the best ever I don't see how anybody could despise it.

Yes, and yes. I couldn't believe how awful it was. I hated every character in the movie.

Silence Of The Lambs. I quit watching the Academy Awards after it won best picture. An absolute piece of shite movie. I laughed through most of it.

The Hurt Locker for me.

And to all of those who say Crash, please keep in mind that the film upon its initial release had a RT rating below 70%. As the years have gone by, critics have added more positive ratings due to the fact the film won Best Picture at the Oscars. It wasn't that well-received in 2005, however, which is why so many people were shocked when it beat out Brokeback Mountain.

These come to mind:

Blair Witch Project
Pulp Fiction
both Kill Bills
Crying Game

There are probably others. When I despise a film, I usually delete it from my memory bank. If I remember any, I'll add later.

Agreed. It's just one of those films that everyone seems to like. Its like hating Almost Famous, which my mom told me yesterday that she hated that movie. I just stared blankly at her for a few minutes unable to comprehend how anyone can dislike that movie.

Shocking and depressing.

This is why Jersey Shore has high ratings. Stupid Americans.

Andy Dufrene is a douche. Morgan Freeman is too wise and noble. Wise, noble people don't end up in prison. The bad-guy warden is one dimensional. Yeah, prison staff are not the brightest bulbs in the world, but nobody is that stupid to miss out on the hero's escape method all those years.

And I don't like Stephen King in general. He apparently didn't do any research at all on how prisons operate, because there are a number of glaring errors. But he's Stephen King, and a lot of people will read his books and go see movies based on them, no matter how shitty. Good for him, I guess.
