The FNs (FNS and FNX) fit very well with someone with larger hands and are in the middle price range.

I respect your opinion as well since you train people and have tons of experience under your belt.
I have a Beretta 90 two and I can honestly say it's one hell of a weapon. You may have two different trigger pulls per say but if a manual safety is important to you, it has one.
You won't know for sure what you want until you hold some. Go to your local gun store and talk to the salesmen to see what they suggest. Feel is very important for comfort.

So what is the best way to go about getting a handgun with the current supply shortage? Should I just go to a local shop or is it better to order from a site like gunbroker?

For under $650 the first one that comes to mind is a full size glock gen 4 with the interchangeable backstraps.
ORRRRR a full size revolver in .357 mag if you don't want to use commie plastic guns.

I did want the .357 initially but I figure I'll buy the semi auto now and save the less banable revolver for later.
From what I've been reading the Glock 17, Ruger SR9 and an XD are within my price range. I hear the SR9 is slim but I might be ok with that; my main issue was length of the grip. I'm hoping a local shop will have all three in stock for me to get a feel for.
ETA: The .357 was going to be for a sidearm for a hog hunting trip I got invited on. Other than that I realize the Glock/Ruger is much more practical.

Out of those choices I like the block best for a self defense or SHTF gun, but for fun shooting I like the SR9 or XDs better. I can't shoot glocks very well.

IF you're realistically considering shooting a hog with an ACP caliber, I would strongly, strongly consider 10mm or .45 ACP - even .357 Sig would be worth considering (or possibly, even .40 S&W). Good news is: Glock makes ALL of these in a full sized handgun - although I don't know if all are available in Gen 4 configuration (but if you are already cool with Glock, Gen 3 might work).

That's your best chance. Go to a local shop and see which one feels best to you. All are great choices.

Check out the baby eagle in a full size or semicompact frame. They have a nice feel. I shoot a 45 and love it. It weighs a lot, though and accessories aren't on every shelf.

I got a Baretta PX4 Storm and tons of ammo for it....that I will probably lose in a boating accident next week...

My dad used to have an XD. I have pretty wide hands and they hang down on a good bit of guns. The XD was one of those where it did. For Glocks, my hands don't hang down on the G20. They hang off on every other one.
I have held bigger HKs and FNs and they work well. But $$$.
The Walther PPQ fit my hands almost perfectly and felt really nice in them. It is cheap too
Full-size 1911s also fit well. PX4s feel weighted all wrong to me.
Just put a tape on my hand and it is between 4.5 and 4.75" wide when it is flat on a table. It is like 5" squeezing something
