Where at? Open water in the US is usually pretty easy. I did my open water cert in Australia and they were brutal. My dive partner nearly didn't make it.

I'm nervous about having to take my mask off and put it back on underwater. I freaked out so much when I did it in the pool that I immediately popped up to the surface(luckily we were in the shallow end).
I think we are gonna be like at 40 feet when we do it, so that isn't an option.

Don't worry. That is exactly what scares everyone most. I'm sure you're worried about sucking water up your nose. I always told myself not to worry because that water would go through my stage 2 just fine.

I had passed all my open water certs in Australia and we were doing a dive with the instructor. He accidentally kicked my mask off and I thought he was testing me more. I gave him a WTF when we got up but he didn't even realize he had done it.
Another cool thing I remember from my open water cert in Australia. The instructor took us down to a sandy on the reef and we were doing the part where you take your BCD off and act like you're working on it. I had already done mine and was sitting on bottom. My dive partner and the instructor were facing me doing the same drill. All of a sudden a black tip shark goes swimming right behind them.
I was wide eyed and pointing but it was gone by the time the turned to see.

Yeah my husband is kinda nervous about how he will react to seeing some of the fish underwater...knowing that he can't just shoot up to the surface if something creepy gets in his face

Enjoy your first open water dive. It won't be as bad as you are expecting. When you get out on your own the worst part is navigating underwater. If you use a dive computer you don't even need to worry with that.

We shall see. I had two mini panic attacks during our time in the pool(I'm claustrophobic). I'm kinda nervous about being 30-40 feet down with such crappy visibility.
