Long time lurker but felt compelled to respond. If you are looking for a fun yet complex game that's easy to pick up, I highly recommend The Resistance. The rules are simple but it is so player focused that the game feels different every time you play.

Here is a review for those interested: The Resistance

For reference, I enjoy Settlers, Dominion, Carcassonne, Smallworld, and Power Grid.

fouldeliverer and I got a GoT board game in a while ago. I hadn't fricked around with them much after high school but that was fun.

I'm going to go slightly off topic here and boast a little, but my neighborhood in Seattle has the coolest game store ever. It's this massive board game store with a cafe/bar built in. They have a large game library that they lend out, and they'll open anything in the store for you to play with in the cafe for free.

This sounds awesome

Excellent game. The only issue is usually player count (it's best 6+), although this is a good party game, so it works.

Yes I should have pointed out that this is much more of a party game and is far more enjoyable with 9 people rather than 5. Still, it is probably the best game you can get for under $20. (I think target has it for $16 something)

The Resistance is a blast. Had a big game night a few weeks ago at a friend's house. Two rooms going and the other room was finishing up their game so we broke this out for a few quick rounds and it was the most fun we had all night.

Freauxzen, A Touch of Evil is very enjoyable and a good change of pace from the deep games. It's a medium learning curve. The mechanics can become a little simplistic, but with good players who can take advantage of bonuses and character traits, it can easily be a great time. The only downside is that I would recommend at least getting the Something Wicked expansion to go along with the core game. If not, it can get old a little too quickly, but then there's that extra expense. Only go for The Coast expansion if you will consistently have a full crowd.

On a side note, I am playing Twilight Imperium right now and I cannot imagine a more complicated game. My life is easier to live than this game is to play.

TTF, your game cafe sounds incredible. We've got a local board game shop that has games going every night, cool folks, decent atmosphere, but nothing that cool.

Axis & Allies
Risk
Stratego
Monopoly
Balderdash

With the right people/amount of alcohol, balderdash can be the funniest board game ever played

Good to know. I'll add it to my long wish list of games.

So I've heard, I haven't played any of the really meaty games yet.

I'm a big fan of Ghost Stories right now though. Maybe not totally complicated, but probably the hardest board game I've played. And it's coop.

This one is another I've played recently. Easy to learn, appropriate for a younger crowd, and the game morphs mid-play and has enough variety to keep it fresh for a long time.

The best board game of all time is and will remain Stratego.

Then you have chess, othello, trivial pursuit, and monopoly.

Yes all of these games do bore me. So they all make my top 5.

My stepdad worked a hard job when I was younger and we didn't get a lot of play time with him, but we could almost always get him to sit down for a game of Stratego.

I still put my flag at the back and surround it by bombs. I'm convinced there is a better strategy but I'm not willing to risk my flag to find it.

It's a good strategy when combined with trickery. Place an odd bomb here and there to throw your opponent off. I also liked to keep a few high ranking officers back there in case the opponent managed to get through the bombs. It's been so long since I've played it now, though, I'm not sure I'd be any good at it.

For those that like Risk a lot, the concept is cool, but that game pisses me off. For some reason, I can never roll well when I need to and I always get booted out of Australia or South America with the quickness by the other players. Then I sit and wait for the inevitable as they build their armies.

I much prefer the Lord of the Rings version which actually has an end in sight because the ring moves toward Mordor independently from the rest of the game, though you have an opportunity to discover it throughout the game and it gives you Raiden's superpowers or some shite.

Too much rolling, I love the nostalgia of it though.

I'd also suggest 7 Wonders, really a brilliant game that plays well at any level.
