Tipping a friend who is a bartender

I have a friend who is a bartender at a very nice restaurant. The wife and I went to dinner and ate at the bar, as it is more low key there and we can visit with our friend and people watch. When the bill came, my friend basically comped us all our drinks and only charged us for food. All the drinks he brought us were items he thought would pair well with our food. In other words, he didn't ask us what we wanted, but knew what would be good. No telling how much the bill would have been had he charged us, but I left him a 40% tip on what he did charge us. Wondering if I should have left him a bigger tip, and what the protocol is in situations like this. I didn't want to leave a 100% tip because I thought that would look suspicious and my friend wouldn't expect something like that.
This is our first time to ever take advantage of this situation, and we will not be doing it regularly. I am interested to see the different responses to this.

If one of my good friends are bartending, then hell no I'm not giving him a tip.
If its someone I know pretty well but aren't close friends, I'll leave him a nice one.

I'm not sure that you 'took advantage' of anything if you weren't expecting te drinks to be comped. In saying that, I think 50% is probably a good tip assuming your meal was $60-75. I probably would have left $30-40.

I has a bartender that has served me about a dozen times comp an entree and a bottle of wine a few weeks ago. I tipped just over %100 of the resultant bill, but my original bill would have exceeded my final total anyway.

As a former bartender, you did right. Don't worry.

So your friend is a thief and that's ok?

They're not trying to steal from the restaurant or expecting you to tip them the cost of the drinks. They're just trying to hook you up. 40% is fair.
Most are just glad to have someone they know to talk too.

Why not just leave a usual good tip as if you were charged for the drinks?
If you do know someone very well, it's gotta be kind of an odd position to be in.

I usually tip near the amount that the full meal would have cost. If I was going there not planning on getting free drinks then I can handle paying near what I expected to pay

Why not? I do this purposely. I have friends at several bars and restaurants, and always get shite comped and I always tip accordingly.
Eta: not stealing in my case
At my regular bar, the employees get a 50% discount every time they work so instead of drinking, they'll give us their discount for the night. Almost always a high up manager
As for my friend at a restaurant here in town, he buys it for us. Pays for it himself since he gets a big discount

If he didn't have authority to comp, he stole. Plain and simple. It's not okay.
Fired an employee not long ago for stealing postage. When some of you grow up and have to deal with the bottom line, you'll change your tune.
