D. Byrd had nothing but great stuff to say about Les Miles. Said stuff to the effect that even now he could show up and ask Les for a favor and Miles would help him.

This reminds me of a scene from Chazz Palminteri's A Bronx Tale...

" A Bronx Tale, Mickey Mantle Scene" (set in October 1960)

Sonny: What are you, a Yankee fan?

Young Calogero: Yeah.

Sonny: Sit down. No, come over here--sit over here next to me. [pause] So you must be pretty upset after the Yankees lost?

Young Calogero: Bill Mazeroski, I hate him. He made Mickey Mantle cry. The papers said that the Mick was crying.

Sonny: Mickey Mantle? Is that what you're upset about? Mickey Mantle makes a hundred thousand dollars a year--how much does your father make?

Young Calogero: I don't know.

Sonny: You don't know? See if your father can't pay the rent, go ask Mickey Mantle and see what he tells you. Mickey Mantle don't care about you, so why should you care about him? Nobody cares. [laughing]

Calogero [narrating]: After that, I never felt the same way about the Yankees.

.....you are 100% correct.

I have been to one game in over 5 years and while tailgating is great, I'd rather watch it somewhere.

With the exception of a handful of guys getting luxury box seating (Ruffin, etc.) most shy away from the fray.

Players hate to lose. But they don't sit there and dwell on the loss and analyze the season like people on here do.

First of all, they are busy getting ready for the next game.

Secondly, playing football is what they do, and they like doing it. They aren't rooting for the team to succeed like fans are... they ARE the team. The players view losses as personal lack of execution problems. They are not happy that they didn't play well, that the team didn't play well. They are not happy that they might not get to play for a NC.

But fans are upset with losses because it means the team they root for might not get another NC, or they might not have bragging rights with their friends.

Players aren't even thinking about what that means in the context of the football program, or the school.

Fans want LSU to win because they are fans of LSU. Players want to win because they want their team to win. They want to win personally.

So when LSU plays Clemson, they aren't thinking about "Clemson" vs. "LSU". They are thinking about "our team" vs. "their team".

My point is, they take losses differently than fans do. Fans take losses hard because they are fans of the "brand". They feel the brand represents them, and so they are unhappy if they live vicariously through that brand and it doesn't succeed.

But players aren't "fans" of LSU. Players don't want to lose because they are the competitors. They are competitive and want to beat all other teams. They don't care about the "brand" of LSU during the season and don't look at it the same way fans do.

D Byrd loves Miles as a person.

Drops his head and starts shaking his head when asked "how about as a coach?"

He said the recieving corp used to be on the sidelines thinking "Theyre puttin NINE in the box coach! Air that bi?(h out!"

I've known some from over the past decade or so. All say there is a complete lack of discipline but the offensive players are a lot more negative than the defensive ones. Most of them pull for LSU but don't exactly show much emotion with it. After a loss there is always "I told you so" and "Miles doesn't know what he is doing" talk. The ones who were on the 2007 team seem to have more pride though from what I've noticed.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I would imagine it.

I go to church with a former LSU DB from the mid-70's; he thinks Les is a total clown.

one of the guys i know who played under saban once told me, "anyone who ever said college is the best years of your life never played college football." for them, it's more of a job than a passion. a few other guys i know who played under saban and graduated prior to the miles era occasionally go to other SEC schools for games and wear merch for those schools. so, while they love and are loyal to LSU, they don't have the sort of all-or-nothing allegiance that many of us fans have. (i cringed when i saw pics of them wearing that awful script A at a bama game)
