I understand (sort of) the attraction of microwave popcorn but no way it can equal stove top. I have a pot with a gimpy handle that's been with me for decades. Last weekend I popped a pretty nice batch of white and blue corn. I think it came from Williams-Sonoma.

In 1961 I worked my first job in the Concession Stand at a drive in theater (Skyview) in Jackson, MS.
Coconut oil as deep orange as you could imagine. Real butter - must have popped three thousand batches.
Now I just run a bag through the microwave. We probably still have our popping boiler in teh cabinet. Maybe I'll get a bottle of popping oil and some popcorn just for old times sake.
There were rules about the amount of salt and oil we used in the concession stand. Lots of oil made really pretty yellow kernals and lots of salt sold more drinks. As a professional Pop corn popper back in those days, I knew for a fact that patrons told us we popped the best popcorn in Jackson, MS.
The Skyview has been gone for years. They took it down when I-20 came through - Actually I-220.
We made a mean goat cheese pizza, too.

Stove top was good and darn fun. It was an event to have Mom pop popcorn on the stove. I usually eat popcorn on the run for lunch or when I've skipped eating all day, so microwave fills the need. Every once in while, I buy one of those foil popping pans. What was that brand? I bought several a few years ago for entertainment. As a child, watching that foil expand was like magic before my very eyes.

i've recently come around to this. when i was really young, we had some kind of contraption that made popcorn on the countertop. it had a clear plastic side, where you could watch the corn pop. endless entertainment for a small child. but after it broke, it was microwave popcorn from there on out.
last year i started making it on the stove top on a whim, and there is no going back for Mrs. Vedder and I.
