Looking for a pump action shotgun...a buddy recommended this just for home security, maybe blasting a duck or two. Is this a good one? or should I go with the comparable Mossberg? and really what is the difference between a $400 shotgun and a $900 one?

The wingmaster is miles ahead of both the express and anything mossberg puts out.

The express functions the same as the wingmaster but you'll find more plastic and aluminum guts in it and the finish will not be as good.

The mossberg is good but I hate the tang safety. I haven't seen an old enough one to comment on its longevity compared to the 870, but the 870 has been considered the standard of reliability for a long time.

get the 870 and use the extra cash and buy a tactical barrel for home defense.

870 is the better shotgun for a cheaper price. Go with the 870.

Get the 870, arguably the best shotgun out there for the price.

I have a 870 and a mossberg 500. I like the mossberg better because of the smoother action. I like the tang safety too

Get an 870. Go find one in a pawn shop after the season is over. They should be available for cheap. I got an older 870 express magnum (shoots 3") for $150 out the door last year.

Great point. You can also probably find an older express that doesn't have the cheap parts in it for a song.

Best of luck.

I've got an old Wingmaster meat gun. Only shoots 2.75".

Do they make one now that shoots 3.5"? I just haven't looked.

870 is about as dependable of a gun as your ever going to find.

But I'd buy the Benelli Nova over it no doubt. Just as dependable, sturdier, looks better and I'd much rather duck hunt with it.

I have had my 870 for quite some time. The best bang for your buck. You can even use it for a paddle when needed, never had a problem with it.

I honestly don't know. Personally, I don't shoot at 3.5 shell so I have never looked for a shotgun that shoots that size

I bought my 870 in 1979-80 for around $190. I still use it today as my primary gun for ducks. I blew up the original barrell in high school crawling geese, and replaced it with a ribbed 3" and have shot 3" shells out of it ever since wuth not one single issue or failure.

I jump to a 3.5 Browning BPS for geese and it tends to hang up quite a bit if you arent super aggressive when pumping the hull out

Bought my son this for Christmas. Put 100 shells through it this weekend and it felt awesome. Fixing to pick up an 870 Supermag for myself though.
