Brits aren't nearly as off-put by killing off lead characters as Americans are.
Apparently not. Losing major characters Sybil and Matthew in such a short time is really un-American. It might have been better if Matthew had a sudden fling with that new maid and run off with her than for what really happened. At least then we could entertain the thought of him possibly coming back all contrite to face the consequences of his dalliance in some later episode. Meanwhile, Mary would be free to play the field. Or not.
Two childbirths. Two deaths. Too tragic.

I figured that, but I just wanted to bitch about his character development or lack there of since coming to DA.

Yeah that's about the only other thing they could have done. It wouldn't have made sense for his character just to leave unless it was with Mary.

They took out just about everyone. I think Zoe and Tom are the only ones that didn't leave in a bodybag.

Every time Jimmy is on screen - I think "That's what the guy who plays the lead on The Mentalist must've looked like when he was younger." I can't be the only one who thinks there's a resemblance.

This would have been the better choice if Stevens was determined to leave. Plus it would have given us fans the chance to compare/contrast the two Matthews and fight over which one was better for the role.

That's it--it kept bugging me that I thought I had seen him somewhere before. I don't watch that show but I know the actor you are talking about. Simon something or another?

So is Branson the next heir to DA now?

No. Matthew and Mary's son is.

But, if the Earl dies then what?

Branson would resume control until M&Ms child became of age, no? I think this is where the series is headed. An Irishman running DA. They are going to have to move Branson into the lead male role or find another husband for Mary who would run DA. I see this dynamic driving the plot forward, it's the only thing that can keep people interested IMO. Branson vs Mary vs The Earl

My wife and I just watched the finale last night and her comment regarding Matthew's death is about as appropriate as anything I can think of: unnecessary.

It would seem there is a trend in TV and movies to kill off main characters to make the production more dramatic, whatever. But in the case of Matthew it just seemed strained, contrived and unnecessary. Killed in an auto accident in one of those old slow jalopies? Really? The show certainly had enough melodrama without it. I mean Sybil had died. Tom is now lonely and distraught, etc. In other words there was plenty of negativity to go around to counter-balance the harmony between Mary and Matthew. Sheesh

The more I think about last night the more mad I get.

Downton Abbey has just become an expensive soap opera with incredible acting, cinematography, and direction. If you strip it down to the writing it is simply a soap opera now. The paralysis, Sybil, and now this are all big soap opera type stories. I also agree with you that they have to start this season at least a year from now because if we have to go through half a season of everyone depressed again I am done.

Oh, and Dan Stevens = Shelley Long. Dumbass.

In all honesty, it's always been this. At least since the start of Season 2.

I kind of agree, but I was holding on to hope that they would these abandon ridiculous story lines. Maybe it is a British thing.

All of the characters, as great as many of them are, are stagnant. Let these actors show their talent and give them some depth to work with! Maggie Smith is one of the most talented women ever in this profession and for the most part all she does is crack jokes. Yes, they are funny and I really enjoy it but give her character some more range and meaning than this. Look at the scene with her and Carson after Sybil's death. I think it was the best scene in the show's history and really showed the talent of the acting on Downton.

If this show wants to survive it needs a writing makeover in the worst way.

No, that never works. Glad they didn't do that!
