What says the OB? Who makes a good .44 lever action these days?

Marlin makes a fantastic one, but the barrel doesn't have the right twist for shooting very heavy bullets. That's my only quelm with it. It's a very nice rifle.

The henry big boy is a great rifle, but it's heavy. Very heavy. It also has a brass receiver which means the only way to mount a scope is with a canteliever mount. If the scope doesn't matter to you, the big boy is a great choice. Definitely the best looking choice.

I think winchester makes one as well, but you have to squeeze the grip on winchester lever actions to disengage the safety, and I absolutely hate that and will not buy a winchester lever action because of it.

If you're talking used, Marlin. I've heard the new ones have quality issues, so be careful there.

i know you said lever, but i had a ruger 44 mag semi auto carbine in the late 70's or 80's and it really was a great gun.. Fairly light, balanced, never jammed, etc.... pretty much looks like a 1022.. i'm not sure if they still make them,,, they should...

Thanks Ole Geauxt, but I'm looking to complete a set of cowboy action weps. Gonna be getting a Ruger .44 revolver to go with a lever action. Nostalgia I guess.

I've looked at both the Marlin and the Henry's. Prefer the Marlin..just didn't know if they still made the Marlin .44.

I own the 1894c, do not buy this gun period, feed issues and timing issues have plagued this rifle, the finish on mine is ok but I have heard other horror stories like barrels with just 50% rifling etc
just google 1894c feed issues
mine works great now but its been to a lever action gunsmith and has had a ton of extra work to get it to feed and get the timing right,
my suggestion is a Rossi, great for the price, Henry is great but their 44 is too flashy for me
if you can find a nib Winchester from before the Japanese product, or the Browning, or the Ruger

as soon as I get some extra cash I'm getting the Rossi in .44 I have seen it in .357 and I know some cas shooters who have put 10s of 1000s of rounds through them
