Before NIU got the Orange Bowl, Iowa State was the HOD Bowl team. The Liberty Bowl was going to trade Tech to the HOD Bowl for Iowa State. When NIU got the Orange Bowl, it knocked Iowa State out and made them an at-large team, so they were available for the Liberty Bowl.
