I'll admit that I'm new to guns, and I'm interested in duck hunting and protecting my home.

For those of you in the Birmingham area, where do you recommend I go to begin training for/purchasing a firearm?

No idea.

I've been deer hunting a few times. I was pretty bored with it, and I even had a doe lined up right in front of me from a shooting house.

A friend of mine recommending bird hunting and described it as being more sporty.

I personally much prefer duck hunting. More activity and it's more social.

How have your hunts been so far? It's been shoveler city in our fields.

Drive to your local Walmart and tell them you would like a Remington 870 in 12 gauge. That will cover all your needs.

Mark's Outdoors in Vestavia has the best selection in the area. Next would probably be Bass Pro

Mark's Outdoors... /endofthread

seriously, they are competitive with walmart within a dollar or two if it's a model walmart carries. and they'll toss in a box of ammo or small extras like that if you go in there.

Badass place.

Worth driving out of the way to go to Simmons IMO. The only person I cared for in Marks was Mark Whitlock himself, so after he passed I quit going completely. Talk about some douche bags. I know more than half the people working in there and they still try to talk down.

I know. Had a buddy owned a small hunting and fishing store on this side of town. Mike Bolton would come in expecting freebies because Mark would always do it for him for exposure in his outdoor articles. When my buddy didn't give him a free ride he went back to Marks. All about looking good for the "right" people over there.
