if you were bored shitless with LOTR then don't waste your time with the hobbit. LOTR is a lot more action packed than the hobbit

Loved it. 9.5/10. Read the books and enjoyed how they replicated it.

I liked most of the movie but I thought the Goblin King scenes were almost as ridiculous as most of Indy and the Crystal Skull.

I could have done without the falling bridge scene. In LOTR it was more believable when the concrete bridge fell apart.

That scene in the hobbit was just silly and most of that scene felt like it was right out of a video game.

I agree with you that was over the top - but the hobbit the book is not written as a historical narrative account like lotr is. It is an account written by bilbo baggins and as such is subject to exaggeration. This is how Tolkien reconciled the two very different tones in the books. In fact the first edition of the hobbit had a different account with gollum than later editions. This inconsistency was referenced by gandalf in lotr because he had read the hobbit and knew it differed from what actually happened. I think this gave Tolkien and now Peter Jackson the leeway to put two very different tones in works involving the same world and characters.

Good movie but not great. I believe the next one will be much better.

Let me take an educated guess here. If I really didn't give a shite about Tolkien's books when I was younger, and I became bored shitless with Jackson's LOTR movie trilogy, I would probably do well just to skip The Hobbit, amirite?

Bump for the weekday crews.

Id almost tell everybody who asks should they see a movie I liked even if they were hesitant, to go see it. But if you were THAT bored with the LOTR series, I don't see you being very interested in this. Tolkien is one of my three favorite authors of all time, but in no way am I a Tolkien/LOTR nerd, I can't explain all the worlds and serious back stories. I ljust oved this book as a kid (still do), and like the Silmarilion/LOTR stuff now that I'm older. It's nice to have some good interpretations of my favorite books. So I'd like to tell you to go see it but it sounds like you wouldn't enjoy it.

The first 40 minutes of the movie is stuck in the mud and overdone. Could have been shorter. The pacing is all over the place. Otherwise I really enjoyed this movie. Visually it has a more cartoonish feel at times but it looks really good. Once they leave bilbo's house, I was glued to it.

I wasn't expecting the movie to be as silly as it was. At times it was more Willow than LOTR.

The hobbit is a children's book. I actually found it be less light hearted than I expected. The book reads like a children's book and I remember going to read LOTR when I was 10 and thinking they were totally different.

I was skeptical of the trilogy aspect but after spending 3 hours in middle earth and wanting more I'm excited.

It was actually more grim and mature than I expected for the hobbit. I thought it struck a good balance, I was just disappointed that I can't take my kids to see it after reading the hobbit and watching the cartoon movie with them.

I would have no problem taking a child to see it. Aside from a couple of decapitations I can't think of anything inappropriate for a child.

I thought it was good. It's just a bit silly. The movie also lacks the feeling that some shite is about to go down, which Lord of the Rings accomplished very well.

My two cents.

The depictions of goblins, violence, and explicit decapitations is intense for small children. I loved the movie but will wait until they're older.

I loved it. I would say anywhere from an 8 to a 10 out of 10 is reasonable. I will see it again in theaters which is something I never do. If you are a fan of this genre of movies then you cannot complain about the changes made to make the movie epic. You are not going to get this kind of quality film in this genre very often. So, I am glad they did what they had to do to make it three films.

i liked it. read it to my son when he was small so it was nice for him and i (he's 15 now) to see it together.

the only thing that got a little old for me (small criticism) is gandolf's constant 'run you fools' and 'get down in this hole you fools' which was effective in LOTR when he's about to be drug to the depths of middle earth by a balrog..but it seemed a bit 'contrived' to be used so much in the hobbit for much less dramatic moments.
