I was originally concerned about the book being split into three movies. Now I'm disappointed there's only going to be two more. 9/10

Did they cg Christopher Lee's face ala Xmen 3? I've seen videos of Lee's face recently and he looks like a corpse.

Most movies would kill to have these ratings but realistically it's the $$ rating they care about. They won't get my $$ rating or a fan/critic rating cause I don't live in Dorkville.

Probably no one will agree with me, but I'm not so sure I really agree with this statement after watching the first movie. Like iwy said, the Hobbit was very true to the book, and in all honesty, I think if PJ was going to do the same with the LOTR books he could have easily made at least 8 movies out of it instead of just 3. A lot was left out of those. I think PJ is giving a better treatment to the Hobbit than he gave to LOTR.
My problem with it is that I think it should have been two films, and then put all that stuff that didn't make the theatrical release into the Extended Editions like they did with LOTR. I'm slightly hesitant now, and gladly so. I'm just worrying about the flow being better with 2 films rather than 3. Granted as a completed piece, either way I think it will be great. Really both this film and LOTR are one film, they're just too unbelievably long to make it in a single theatrical release. Think about it from LOTR. Did Fellowship or Two Towers have a climax? I don't think they did. Fellowship certainly didn't, and yeah Two Towers may have somewhat of a climax with Gandalf marching down the hill and the Last March of the Ents, but really this is just a subplot. The main plot is Frodo, Sam, and Gollum's journey, and that certainly didn't have a climax to it. Plus the films on their own certainly don't follow the three act structure; Really Fellowship was the First Act (Breaking of the Fellowship is clearly the end of the First Act of the story as a whole), all of the Two Towers and most ROTK was the Second Act (with it ending at the Battle of Pelenor and Frodo and Sam entering Mordor), and then the 3rd Act goes from there.

Honest question. Would anyone have different feelings for the movie if the LOTR trilogy didn't exist yet? And this was the first of six movies about middle earth?
Nope. I went into LOTR only having read the Hobbit, and I really loved that book. Read it 3 times before reading LOTR. I didn't even know of LOTR's existence until 2 months before its release. I went into LOTR not even knowing it was a trilogy, and was expecting the most anti-climatic ending ever, in that Frodo would just cross that damn river and throw it into the volcano. LOTR instantly became my favorite film, so I think I would very much enjoy this film at the time.

Did you know Serkis was the director for the second unit? He basically was director for the entire cavern scene with Bilbo!

If you understand film as a medium (aside from animation, which could definitely pull that off), then you'll know that they basically had no choice but to do that.

Just saw it....and it was entertaining as hell! Sure it wasn't FOTR, but I never expected it to be. Great start to the new trilogy.

It had the "epic feel" that 2T and ROTK had but I don't remember half of the things that happened in the book and the plot wasn't as good as those two. Again, Gollum stole the show in one of the few parts I remembered from the book. The fight scenes were good, but again I'm left asking about of the biggest plotholes of all time, the Eagles, why didn't they get the eagles to help in the first place?

Are you referring to LotR or the Hobbit? If the Hobbit, the only reason the they helped the dwarves was Gandalf and the fact that they really fricking hate Orcs. They're not going to help the Dwarves anymore than they have to, since most of Middle Earth thinks they're on a suicide mission of greed. Killing Orcs is just pretty much the favorite pastime of Eagles. With LotR, the Nazgul would have easily taken them down before they got to Mount Doom. Even if they made it there, the Nazgul and the rest of Sauron's army sure as hell would have made sure they didn't make it out. Not even close to a plot hole.

IMO it was a movie for hardcore LOTR junkies/nerds. The script was average by crappy sci-fi standards and the movie was long and boring.
