I know that our defensive line needs help, but would most of you agree that our secondary is poor in coverage and horrendous in terms of tackling. Roman Harper needs to go, and I would move Jenkins to strong safety. Greer is still effective. Robinson always seems to be near his man, but never locates the ball; this should be corrected with coaching. Robinson is also not the greatest tackler in the world. We need a badass free safety ( why didn't we pursue Laron Landry?) that opponents fear when they go over the middle. Who is available in the draft that can make an immediate impact?

My honest opinion is that a difference maker at pass rusher would make the secondary look infinitely better. Although I definitely want to nab a CB and/or S in the draft.

I'd like to see us go OT with the 1st pick and go defense the rest of the way. I trust spags will get guys that fit what he wants to do the most.

I agree with this. Also, Landry wasn't the solution. He's a strong safety who has been a liability in coverage, and he struggles to stay healthy. He wouldn't have been a great upgrade over what we have.

They've been significantly better in coverage since the pass rush has improved...funny how that works. Most of the secondaries in the league are bad at tacking (SF the obvious exception that comes to mind).quote:

He's actually played quite a bit better over the 2nd half of the season...I like what we're doing with him. , quote:

So you're moving one of the poorer tacklers to a position that is used more for run support?

pretty much agree on both counts although again I think the play of both has improved with the increase in pressure by the front 7. Robinson is also not the greatest tackler in the world.quote:

so you talk about not being able to cover and you want this roided out punk? The dude is a GIANT coverage liability.

so we can get hit with 15 yard flags every single time? The intimidating headhunter safety has been rendered completely obsolete in the new NFL.

hopefully more pass rushers

Someone is equating Laron Landry's off-season photo ops with on field success.

The point is that the secondary has to improve, and we cannot pay Harper 7 plus million for his talent level. I do think Jenkins has the size to play strong safety; I think he is fair at free.

I think Harper has been more than serviceable this yr. Jenkins has been terrible.

Does not compute.

the Jets were the only one that even gave landry a sniff. Now there is a true shell of his former self player. Way worse than Harper all the way around. Harper gets way too much grief. He is an above avg NFL SS. I only have beef with his cap hit- $15mil the next 2 yrs. He's right behind Palomalu, Goldson, & Weddle in pay (and going up). That's a bit overpaid. I've about given up on Jenkins. His arrow was pointed way up in '10 but he's gone backwards for 2 seasons. Terrible angles & arm tackling. Let him go after his rookie deal expires in 2014 unless he comes to life next year. Said before, methinks Robinson might have had the hardest transition to Spags D than any other player. He was drafted primarily for his man skills and that is virtually out the window now. He has located the ball enough for 3 INTs and has more passes defended than anyone else on the team. If they wanted to make a free agent splash letting Harper or Jenkins go William Moore & Goldson are on tap for UFA. Draftwise for 3rd Rd safeties I like- Matt Elam FL Tony Jefferson OK Bacarri Rambo GA Phillip Thomas Fresno St Robert Lester AL

Not so sure about this hes had a good year.

Jenkins
Probley the most disapointing player on the team, he deffinately needs to step up to keep his job next year. I have no worries about Greer. Robinson had a rough start to the season but is finishing well. I think the secondary is all gonna depend on how well Jenkins improves next year imo, im good with our cbs and harper.

I agree that Harper gets way too much grief. Safeties are typically called upon to be the most versatile players on the defense. They have to cover and tackle as major parts of their game. No safety in the league is great at both. The best safeties in the league are great at one and good at the other. Harper had a rough start, but at worst he is an average safety, being paid like a top 5 safety.

I'm with blues on Harper. My only issue is his contract. I doubt they let him walk, but I'd love to get Moore. Young SS from a division rival. No brainer IMO. I don't know what's up with Jenkins and PRob this year. I really believe that PRob is the most talented guy in the secondary, but he's just lacks ball skills or awareness or something. I wonder how Jenkins would be at CB with all this zone coverage? For whatever reason he's just a non-factor this year. Greer is still an above average CB. Like I said in the other thread, he does sometimes let his guys get deep on him. I wonder if that's scheme or just botched coverage? And yeah, the lack of any viable pass rusher puts a ton of pressure on the defensive backfield. I think we have plenty of talent in the backfield with Greer, PRob, White, Mack, Harper, Jenkins & IAQ to avoid going secondary in the draft. Loomis, SIGN WILLIAM MOORE. Do It!!!

He's made several good on-ball plays this season. In fact, I think he has good ball skills. He's physically outmatched is the problem. He gets blown by bigger, faster receivers all the time
