Hey guys,
The topic of different low noise 22 LR loads to use for pest control has been mentioned here a couple different times. My shooting has been done w/ a number of different 22 LR's, mostly the Ruger M 77/22 and Ruger 10/22. My personal experience w/ a number of different subsonic loads has been disappointing. While they've been accurate, to my ears, their muzzle blast has been only minimally less than regular high velocity 22 LR's. CCI 22 Short HP's are MUCH more quiet than high velocity rounds, but accuracy has been dismal; in addition, they will not feed from the magazines of the 77/22 or 10/22. I finally found a box of CCI CB 22 Long's. Muzzle velocity is 710 fps. Think of this as a "short" sized bullet in a "long rifle" sized case. The bullet is a lead round nose and weighs 29 grains. It feeds well in all my Ruger magazines. Accuracy is slightly better than the Shorts, but still not very good. The noise signature is about the same as the shorts.

I had read about a new load from CCI called the "Quiet-22." I found a 50 round box at a gun show 2 weeks ago for $2.95. It has a 40 grain lead round nose bullet atop a long rifle case. It feeds nicely from Ruger mags. Velocity, like the "CB 22 Longs," is 710 fps. Muzzle noise sounds like the Shorts and "CB 22 Longs." But, it's MUCH more accurate than the others.

Just before dark, I shot a quick 4 shot group of the "CB 22 Longs," as well as a 5 shot group of the "Quiet-22." Distance was 25 yards. I was fighting dark so the shooting was quick and off a table w/o any other support.

Here's a pic. CB 22 Long on left, "Quiet-22" on the right. The "Quiet-22" group was only 0.35" center to center. This new round looks promising. I hope to try it out on some unwanted pests.

I'll definitely have to look into that.

My henry shoots CB longs decent, CB shorts horribly, and CCI standard velocity very well

The only subsonic/low noise rounds I have shot from my stock 10/22 has been the CCI 22 CB Longs. They are not powerful enough to cycle the action and effectively make the gun a bolt-action. This cartridge only has an effective accurate range of about 25 yards, but are still fun as hell to shoot because they won't alarm any neighbors. They are about as loud as a car door slamming. I have a .177 air gun that shoots louder.

Does this new CCI Quiet-22 cartridge cycle the semi-auto action?

nice grouping on the right
have you tried the "powderless" .22 ammo? its made by an italian company and is quiet. accuracy out to 15 yds is really good.

This is correct. The short and long CCI's only have the primer in the round, no gunpowder. The longs seat better in my Henry as well and give me better accuracy. I'm not sure how quiet the "quiet-22" is compared to Remington’s "subsonic" loads, but you might want to give those a try.

I compared the Remington shorts and the CCI Quiets out of a little single shot (daughter's Christmas present) last weekend. The Quiets were much less noisy than the Remingtons, but both were much louder from my gun than the true CB caps.

And mine shot the CCI Quiets well also. Much better than the Remingtons.

Of all, which have you found to be the quietest of all the common rounds, CB and shorts included?

I'm about to order some for pest (cat) control. My neighbors generally frown on hearing a report followed by a missing cat.
