Unions served a purpose long ago before their were laws and agencies protecting the working men and women. Today, the only people who need the union are the union bosses so they can maintain their fat cat lifestyle. There is no reason to be paying a person who puts on a tire on the assembly line $50 an hour, a machine can do the same job and probably better.

So why if I join the company 6 months after "Membership" voted for it, should I be forced to pay into their scam.

Like it or not, Unions are scum and are most of their lockstep members

How nice and totalitarian of you. Once you vote, you excluded all who disagree with you from your job site unless they pay you your extortion money.

Elections have consequences.

Anyway, my quote of the day is from Geoffrey Fieger who called this malignant, dirty politics, done without public hearing in a lame duck session, possibly illegal, and that Rick Snyder is Dick DeVos' waterboy.

You're right and Michigan is about to find that out to the better of everyone involved, whether they are too blind to see it or not.

It is really rich that liberals oppose right-to-work laws because they could lead to more "free-loaders" (i.e., people who receive union benefits without paying dues). Hmmm. . .

McFly, how did that business get "unionized" in the first place? The membership voted for it. Or, there was a card check plus employer recognition (blame your employer for not demanding a vote, in that case). Construction industry is a bit different and there may not have been a vote, but you can get a vote at any time.

I bet you support card check and union intimidation

I bet you supported the murder of that Kentucky coal miner who crossed the picket line.

I know Trumka supported that murder, and I am sure you agree with him.

Go Go Unions!

quote:

(CNSNews.com) - In the public schools in Detroit, Mich., according to the U.S. Department of Education, only 7 percent of the eighth graders are grade-level proficient or better in reading.

Some public school teachers in the City of Detroit and around the state of Michigan are reportedly taking a vacation or a sick day today to protest right-to-work legislation likely to be approved by the state legislature. Under current law, Michigan public school teachers must pay dues to the teachers’ union. If the right-to-work law is enacted, Michigan public-school teachers will be free to join the union and pay dues to it if they wish, but they will also be free not to join the union and not to pay it dues.

Detroit public-school eighth graders do even worse in math than they do in reading, according to the Department of Education. While only 7 percent scored highly enough on the department’s National Assessment of Educational Progress test in 2011 to be rated “proficient” or better in reading, only 4 percent scored highly enough to be rated “proficient” or better in math.

re: Michigan Teachers and Nurses Walkout
Throughout the education debates between concerned parties have you ever heard the teacher's unions put forward real solutions other than to give themselves a pay raise???

Teachers should have the best insight as to ways to improve public education, but all you get from their perspective is we need more money.

Well more money hasn't helped.

Exactly, but with the union incompetent teachers are protected. And yes I know, it's not just the teachers at fault for this parents need to take some of the responsibility for their kids education.

Exactly right. And then they attack anyone who tries to address the glaring problems by saying that "they don't know anything about education."
