I believe it will be the 14' 6 inch XT Old Town canoe.
What should I do to outfit it for fishing?
Is a trolling motor a must? I would enjoy some marsh fishing within an hour or 2 drive from BR. Any tips? Mostly it will be used for use in my back yard 10acre lake.

Yes. I'm jealous.

Yea she is getting it with the idea that I will take my son (8m old) out in the backyard around the lake as he gets older and it will be a nice family canoe.
I have a slightly altered idea of powering it and adding rodholders and depthfinder outriggers and bringing it on the road.

I wouldnt get a canoe for fishing. Yak is a much better set up IMO.

I dont have that option as I like a yak and told I wanted that but she overruled as it needs to fit 2 adults and a child in it for backyard purpose. Canoe works for that.

Look at the kayak canoe hybrids...

I would start hinting that a kayak would be better suited for what you're looking for.
How old is your son? My son is 10 and he and I fish out of our Native Ultimate tandem all the time- very roomy, comfortable seating and easy to transport. Works well with just me paddling and him enjoying the ride and fishing- a canoe would require both of you to paddle.
My suggestion would be to look into:
Native Ultimate Tandem
Jackson Big Tuna
Nucanoe Frontier
Gheenoe

Thats nice and all but she already bought the canoe. So Im looking for advice for setup and places to go with that.
Son would be way too young to take out fishing anywhere outside back yard.

Just saw your latest post. . .
Again, depending on how old your child is, Native makes a 16ft Ultimate with a weight capacity (600lbs) that would hold 2 adults and a child. Plenty of room up front for an adult and child.

Two paddles, two life jackets, ice chest and fishing equipment. When I was a kid my Dad and I fished all over the basin in a canoe, and around BR. You do not need a motor. Consider some of the Fla Parish rivers, Comite, Amite, Bogue Falaya, Tickfaw, etc. Pat's Bay, Bayou Sorrel, Grand River Flats in the Basin. We even fished Old River and False River. Much fun for the boy, you just have to learn how to paddle without tipping.

ahhh got ya. well then trolling motor, rod holders, anchor, aerated ice chest/bucket, etc.
and look into straps to strap everything down. nothing worse than losing all your tackle/rods at the bottom of a lake. and maybe look into making some support beams to come off the sides so it wont tip

That doesnt sound like one that was already purchased so I didnt know. Anyway, I would give her hell everytime I went in that thing and got frustrated with its fishablilty for making you get that. Plus, if your sons that young, its not going to be nearly as stable as a yak. Yak has a ton more options for what your wanting to set up.

Yaks are great for solo fishing, but with kids and all the equipment necessary, canoes are great. You sit higher, so slightly tippier, but the carrying capacity makes it worth it.

Convert it to a kayak.

Lucky. Canoes are perfect for family outings. Once you learn the correct strokes you can cover water almost as good as a yak. Carry four times the gear and stabile.
Keep it simple milk crate with rods holders an ice chest.

Well I was thinking of putting something like this on it to prevent tipping.

For solo fishing would I just buy a kayak double paddle?
