| re: Spur of the moment toy purchase.. Electric RC plane (Posted on 12/9/12 at 3:37 pm to LSUPhreaK)
I always wanted one as long as I could remember. Several years ago, a ran across someone that was selling a nitro trainer that they bought and only flew once or twice. So I bought the plane and all the accessories from him. I was amazed at how big the thing was, it had a 5 ft wingspan. Anyway, I had no idea how to fly it and I knew I'd crash it so I went to that field off Burbank and there was an old man out there that helped me. We were able to link our controllers and he piloted the take-off, got it pretty high up in the air and in a oval pattern. He would switch it over to me and I'd have it for about 20 seconds before I would start to lose control. He would then take control back and get it back under control. We did this for an hour or so. I met him one other time and we did the same thing. I got better at it but still would lose control every so often. The third time I wanted to fly it, I couldn't get in touch with him so I took it to the State Fairgrounds off Airline. I took off got about 10 feet in the air, and a gust of wind smashed it straight down, doing a good bit of front end damage. I took it home, repaired it, and sold it on Ebay. It was WAY harder than I thought, and the nitro ones don't take off out of your hand so you need a special place to be able to fly it. It was more work than it was worth to me. I think it would have been more fun if I would have had a friend or two that was into the hobby as well, or at least someone to help me so I didn't have to get in touch with a 70 year old man to fly it. A guy I work with bought an electric one awhile back and he would fly it behind Pennington. He spent a good bit, i think just the controller was around $400. He played with it for about 2 or 3 weeks and hasn't flown it in months.

After dealing with the expense and maintenance required with nitro engines, brushless and li-po are a no-brainer for me.

You are spot on about brushless and lipo batteries, have you ever flown a r/c plane? If not before you buy your first plane buy a simulator it will be the best $100 you spend
