Just thought I'd drop a helpful hint here to anybody that has American Express I was actually denied today at my second day of having the card at a gas station on Bluebonnet. Raceway, I believe

Was it because it was an AMEX or just rejected?

I've never seen a gas station that doesn't take AMEX.

They said that they did not accept American Express. Not that it was rejected. It's across from the mall.

Racetrack doesn't take Amex

Along with some of the other cheap gas stations, and some of the small town ones

There are two places I go regularly that don't take my Amex.... A Mom & Pops Sandwich Shop and inside at Sam's Club.... I use my USAA MasterCard there

If you have Amex as your primary card... Carrying a back-up card is a must

This.

I pair my Amex with the Citi Forward Visa. Pairing with a Mastercard would be more optimal for me because Sam's is weird and doesn't take Visa.

Small Hijack- Does anyone use Amex savings accounts? Mint just alerted me that Capital One is changing my savings acct APY to 0%. American Express is offering a high yield savings account for 0.90% APY.

They take Discover and MasterCard for Credit

They take Visa and Mastercard for Debit

I've carry a crappy Citi Mastercard as my backup card. They have crappy service but it has a ridiculous limit. I never use it and the balance is cleared out.

5% back on dining, bookstores, and Amazon is pretty phenomenal.

If I used a ton of gas, I would definitely get the Penfed Card.

I have the forward, too. I don't think the 5% still applies to Amazon and the points aren't the same as other cards as far as redemption goes. It can vary from less than 1% to just a little over 3% depending how you redeem, so it's not really 5%

1 month ago I got 1 cent per point on brooks brothers gift cards.

I'll look into the amazon thing, but I am pretty sure I am getting it.

You see that promotion they had for double points on travel? Hell, maybe 5 points on travel. I used it for a honeymoon I paid off.

If I don't go on a road trip (only my daily driving) I would probably burn about a tank a month. I have 2 tanks per month budgeted, which is close to my average.

My dad burns 2-3 tanks a week. For him it would be a great deal.
