The participation rate is at something like a 50 year low. I guess millions have decided things are going so swimmingly they'd like to rely on one income and have more mouths to feed?

Read the report. LINK
quote:
The unemployment rate edged down to 7.7 percent in November. The number of unemployed persons, at 12.0 million, changed little.
quote:
Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult men (7.2 percent), adult women (7.0 percent), teenagers (23.5 percent), whites (6.8 percent), and Hispanics (10.0 percent) showed little or no change in November. The unemployment rate for blacks (13.2 percent) declined over the month. The jobless rate for Asians was 6.4 percent (not seasonally adjusted), little changed from a year earlier.
quote:
The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) was little changed at 4.8 million in November. These individuals accounted for 40.1 percent of the unemployed. (See table A-12.)
quote:
The civilian labor force participation rate declined by 0.2 percentage point to 63.6 percent in November
quote:
The number of persons employed part time for economic reasons (sometimes referred to as involuntary part-time workers), at 8.2 million in November, was little changed
quote:
there were 979,000 discouraged workers in November, little changed from a year earlier.
quote:
The change in total nonfarm payroll employment for September was revised from +148,000 to +132,000, and the change for October was revised from +171,000 to +138,000.
So using rationale and logic. How does the unemployment rate decrease when 1) All employment numbers are little changed from LAST YEAR? 2) How does the unemployment rate decrease, when the labor participation rate has decreased? Are you smart enough to connect the dots?

Do you not realize that baby boomers and subsequently their offspring have children? A simple search will point to the reality that birth rates of the 90's were a little more and sometimes a little less than the corresponding baby boomer years. It's a fallacy to attribute the falling participation rate to baby boomer retirement. I support the position that the bleak employment picture has led more households to become single earner homes. Not inherently a bad thing but coupled with those flat out giving up and going on the government dime, we have some major issues that will be glossed over by the house of cards that is our UE rate.

I would add to it that this is the time when the 99-week limit on Unemployment benefits is ending for those that have been on it the longest, which *should* be putting many back into the job-seeking market.

How is the labor participation rate, how many droped out of the labor market last month? Obama can have full employment if he depressess us enough or make the benefits lucrative enough to get all of the annoying unemployed to stop looking for work.

There are a lot of old people so they can both simultaneously increase the drop out rate even while their participation rate climbs. Of course they have to retire some day so that should free up some jobs. I would expect the participation rate to go down a bit when the economy gets a little better and they are able to sell their homes and downsize like my parents just did.

Demographic changes are the key here.. Righties looking for a boogey man are ill informed. From the bureau of labor: The overall labor force participation rate is expected to decline for the remainder of the decade, projected to fall to 62.5% in 2020.[6] By the year 2020, the subpopulation of older adults in the United States is expected to reach 97.8 million people, comprising 28.7% percent of the entire U.S. population, a rise from the 24.7% in 2010.[6] This increase in proportion of older adults can be attributed to the entire Baby Boomer cohort joining the older adult population (ages 55+) by 2020.

Sadly, Americans are so fricking stupid, they don't even understand that you need to know BOTH the unemployment rate as well as total employment participation. I mean frick. Technically, you could have zero percent unemployment AND zero percent working if everyone just gives up.
