Pernice Brothers - Overcome by Happiness

Great album and band - like all of Joe Pernice's incarnations: Chappaquedic Skyline and his solo album (which is the soundtrack to a book he wrote). Working Girls from the Pernice Brothers' The World Won't End is exhibit A in the trial against corporate radio and why great music rarely makes the airwaves. Working Girls:

Matt Nathanson covered it. It was in just about every American Pie movie. Pops up on my ipod all the time

In 1973 some high school kids in a small town in Iowa decided to make a record.

Elmore Leonard's favorite band, The Stone Coyotes.

They're from Massachusetts but became kind of popular in Houston doing local gigs and getting airplay on a small indy radio station here. Straight forward simple rock-n-roll that tells a tale.

I'm sure tons of people are familiar with Brian Eno, but I never see anyone talk about his album Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy. It is brilliant, overlooked 70s art-pop (before he started doing ambient music for airports stuff).

I really like Eno and lean more towards Another Green World and Here Come the Warm Jets, which are in that same time period... I included a song off AGW on the favorite obscure guitar solo theread...

Obscure and it's a shame.

Wonderful melancholy pop music... I like everything Joe's done...

On Chappaquidick skyline, there is a great cover of New Order's Leave Me Alone

Ironically, there was a hit song on this record "Laid" but it's probably the worst track on it.

Anybody remember it/them? Simply incredible song writing. I saw 'em in '94 too and they put on a damned great live show.

when the band plays at red rocks (seats thousands) and sells out, I just can't say no one has heard of them.

My two favorites that no one has heard of are....
- Guts - Freedom - Trouble in France
Everyone from your sister to your cousin to your grouchy neighbor will like this album. Especially stoners. But non stoners won't get all the plays
- Saturday looks good to me - Lift me up - good ole fashioned twee.

I posted them in a similar thread recently as well

The Sheepdogs

A newish rock band from Canada that has put out some good stuff and won some awards up there. Very southern rockish sounding sometimes and more recently a Black Keys sound since Dan Auerback produced their last album.

I saw the Sheepdogs earlier this year, they were great.

My nieces boyfriend is in a band I have mentioned here before, The Brothers Comatose, but they just had a video on CMT they did with Nicki Blume, so they may get a little more known.

Moses Guest is another local Houston band that deserves more attention. I'd put them up against Widespread any day.

Anyone in BR in the 80's and a fan of the punk scene would know the US Times, I wanna go to London.

I still love that song
