Per his fb.

Common for ALS patients as they lose control of being able to swallow

It's going to be within 3 months (being generous). Good friend's dad, and several patients have been at this point. Hopefully this lets him have a little more quality with his remaining time.

It'll probably be up to him and his wife when to remove the breathing apparatus, assuming he has one installed at some point.

I'd prefer you didn't do that in this thread.
All right?

This isn't the OT.

The only good thing about getting ALS is that you typically don't start showing symptoms until later in life. So, you get to live a pretty normal life up until it hits.

Then again, I guess you could argue that it is worse to get hit later in life because you have no idea anything is wrong and then BAM your life is changed.

Either way, frick ALS.

ALS has its ups and downs depending on how you look at it. Its much faster than multiple sclerosis and guillian-barre so you don't spend 20 years of crappy life. The flip side is it occurs so fast (5-10 years) that most people don't have time to figure themselves out or whatever they and their families need to do. With all three of the diseases, mostly ALS and MS because of the descending route (if I remember correctly), once the diagphram is affected and respiratory function is disabled the person is unable to live on without support.
